Anonymous Celebrates Guy Fawkes Day By Hacking ImageShack

Guy Fawkes Day celebrations of a sort began online Sunday when hackers defaced multiple NBC web sites in addition to a fan page for pop singer Lady Gaga. Anonymous has disclaimed any association with the NBC hacks, but today, as part of an effort they’ve dubbed “Operation Vendetta,” the hacktivist collective has been tearing through several other high-profile sites. Hits include image host ImageShack and pages belonging to the Australian government.

Many media outlets reported a possible PayPal hack as well, however PayPal issued a denial, stating they had no evidence of a breach.

Additionally, credit for the Symantec hack may go to a hacker or group of hackers called HTP, not the larger de-centralized mass of Anons. Read More

NBC’s Website Was Hacked and Defaced Just Before Guy Fawkes Night

Earlier today, NBC’s website was hacked. The site returned to normal for a few minutes, but now even the homepage is having problems. This afternoon, users who clicked on the “Shows” or “Full Episodes” tab were shown a black page with glowing lights, loud music, and references to Guy Fawkes Night, which is celebrated on November 5th.  NBC’s mobile landing site, Saturday Night Live page, 30 Rock clips, and NBC Sports Rotoworld were also hacked.

Despite the Fawkes reference, Anonymous has not yet taken credit for the hack. A message on the site said “Hacked by pyknic.” It’s also unclear why NBC was a target. Not a Louis C.K. fan, perhaps? Read More

Anonymous Plans Worldwide Anti-Government Protests Dubbed Operation Vendetta [Video]

Members of Anonymous in the United Kingdom are planning a public action for November 5, 2012 that may spread to other capital cities around the world. The protest has been dubbed Operation Vendetta, or #OpVendetta, after V for Vendetta, the film that inspired much of Anonymous’s ethos as well as the hacktivist collective’s adoption of Guy Fawkes masks.
