Match-dot-cocktail. Match.com held its annual cocktail party at site relationship expert Whitney Casey‘s opulent SoHo apartment on Wednesday night. The bar was wide open, finger foods were aplenty, and we got to chatting with CEO Sam Yagan about online dating in all its permutations.

Also a co-founder of OkCupid, Mr. Yagan is one of the entrepreneurs responsible for online dating as we know it. Midway through the evening, he addressed the crowd. He noted that his companies had worked mainly on “stigma-busting for the last 10 years,” and would now be turning their attention to mobile. Since Match.com is Tinder’s lead investor, Mr. Yagan is clearly ahead of the game. Read More

Rumor Roundup: Kim Kardashian Might Have the New iPhone and Alexis Ohanian Bros Out

Screenshot_2013-09-13-10-36-53

Selfie study Kim Kardashian could be in possession of the just-announced iPhone 5s, or sunlight could’ve just made her black iPhone look grey. Tech!

Refinery29 spotted a photo uploaded to Ms. Kardashian’s Instagram in which the iPhone that appears looks mysteriously like the Space Gray color the new iPhone 5s will be offered in. That wouldn’t be too much of a surprise, given Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak was one of the first non-Kardashian humans to visit baby North West. But let’s not kid ourselves: it’s been awhile since Mr. Wozniak had any sort of insider pull at Apple and he’s going to be waiting in line for the iPhone 5s just like everyone else.

We’ll chalk this one up to a suspicious choice in filter. Read More

Cooling Last month, Tumblr CEO David Karp sallied forth to the Cannes Lions festival/advertising love-in, as part of a charm offensive meant to convince potential clients they should flog their brands on the social network.

He also took the time to sit down beachside with an NBC anchor, singing the praises of fancy-pants advertising: “If you took all the ads out of Vogue, one it would be a much smaller magazine, but two it would be much less the magazine. those ads are great content, they’re a big part of the experiences,” he said. “What we’re here this week to do is to push more of those most creative advertisers to make ads that make Tumblr better, that make for more great, fun stuff on Tumblr to enjoy.”

He looked like the frontman for an early 2000s indie rock band making an appearance on an MTV Spring Break special, which is a great little symbol for how users are going to flip if they decide Tumblr’s selling out. Read More

Grouper get together Last night Betabeat ventured to Chez André at The Standard for a popup speakeasy for Grouper, an online “social club” that matches groups of friends up with each other for a night out on the town. The crowd appeared to be populated by the well-groomed facet of the technology sector–maybe it was heavy on the fintech and fashtech arenas?–with besuited bros and well-dressed ladies sipping drinks from the open bar and swaying along to Icona Pop. Now that Jay-Z is starting a sports talent agency, it looks like he might have to offload his stake in the Brooklyn Nets if he wants to rep NBA players. Bye bye. (Photo: Netflix)

If you were hoping to get rich off of being one of the first to build apps for Google Glass, think again: Google has prohibited developers from using ads or charging for apps. We’re betting Google wants to keep  that potential ad revenue all to itself. [The Verge]

Sources tell Bloomberg Twitter is seeking a deal with Viacom and Comcast that would allow it to host clips (as well as ads alongside those clips) on the site. Can’t you at least verify @Jack’s parents first? [Bloomberg]

Binge-watching shows is about to get a whole lot easier: Netflix is finally ditching Microsoft Silverlight in favor of HTML5 video. [The Verge]

"Leave me alone." (Photo: Twitter)

Yesterday afternoon–after the controversy had already begun to cool down–Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian decided to chime in on the vicious online response to Adria Richards, who publicly called out two developers for what she perceived as sexist jokes at a Python conference.

In a blog post titled, “Dear Fellow Geeks: WTF?” he takes his fellows to task for the invectives and threats hurled at Ms. Richards.

“Aren’t we better than this?” he asks: Read More
