Google is gearing up to start shipping Glass by the end of the year, and the company has already promised prototypes to celebs like Newt Gingrich and Soulja Boy. But they’re not the only global technology company that wants to bring the future to your face.

Reuters reports that Baidu, a Chinese search company often compared to Google, is developing its own smart specs prototype designed to “leverage Baidu’s strengths in image search and facial recognition.”

There’s at least one big difference between what the two companies are doing, though: Baidu isn’t going to try to convince you this is the perfect accessory for your snake-handling, parachuting lifestyle. No, Baidu understands why you really want smart glasses, and that’s to step up your paparazzi game:

“What you are doing with your camera, for example, taking a picture of a celebrity and then checking on our database to see if we have a facial image match, you could do the same thing with a wearable visual device,” Kuo said.

We’re just glad they’re not making yet another stupid smart watch.
