When Hackers Attack

anon nyse Anonymous Declares War: On October 10 at 3:30 p.m., the New York Stock Exchange Will Be No More [UPDATED]

The hacker collective Anonymous has released another video and with it, another declaration of war–this time on the New York Stock Exchange. A serious attack on the NYSE’s infrastructure would devastate global trade, but Anonymous’s exact aim is unclear. However, the hacker collective is planning to overwhelm the exchange’s public-facing website, NYSE.com,  in a DDOS attack.

In its typically-articulate message, Anonymous expresses solidarity with the protesters gathering in a park two blocks from Wall Street.

For too long, the crimes of Wall Street bankers, CEOs, and a corrupt political system have created economic injustices that has gone unchallenged. A new civil rights movement has begun.

Today, the brave citizens of New York are standing up to these atrocities, a voice of reason in an ever-failing society. Over the past few days, thousands of people have chosen to take a stand against these injustices. The 1% has abused the freedom they have been given. We are taking to the streets to show the wealthy elite that we, the 99%, are no longer going to grease the gears of this abhorrent system.

Anonymous had already declared its support for the movement a week before the protest started. Betabeat glimpsed some youth wandering the protest’s hub, Zuccotti Park in the financial district, with Guy Fawkes masks–and apparently some protesters on the ground are going around claiming to be part of the hacktivist group. Anonymous has brought in some WiFi and technically skilled folks, but so far Anonymous’s biggest contribution to the movement has been click-based–retweets, publicity, that sort of thing.

If the hackers take down the NYSE, it could actually ding the industry the protesters haven’t really managed to hurt yet–aside from disrupting the usually-quiet morning walks of some of the area’s bankers. (Note: Many of the city’s finance professionals don’t work on Wall Street–most of the trading is now done digitally, leaving the trading floor to ossify into an increasingly irrelevant symbol.)

FULL TRANSCRIPT:

Citizens of the World,

We are Anonymous.

The lifeblood of the country is the working class, without it our people and our economy will crumble. Those who sustain present-day colonialism are the enablers of modern-day fascism. Our government has granted hefty tax exemptions to the rich at the cost of our social services. We as taxpayers have served as the multi-billion dollar credit line to the companies and banks that continue to systematically abuse us.

We are here to say that we do matter. We will not be manipulated, threatened, or toyed with by the wealthy. No longer can you acquire profit and political power to our detriment.
These few people are running the world, and they are running it into the ground.
Political power cannot be traded or bought; it must be earned and agreed upon by the governed. This is our chance to show them that the people will not allow this to continue.

We are forced out of our homes. We are denied medical care. We suffer from poverty and pollution. We work long hours just to stay afloat, while the 1% reap benefits we can only imagine. Our sworn enemy is the corrupted corporation. –We are the 99%.

You have complained that something needs to be done. You now have an opportunity to make a difference.
Join the protests. Organize your own. Watch online. Be a part of the movement.

This is our movement. This is your moment.
Together, make history.

Vox Populi, Vox Anon.
The Voice of The People is the Voice of Anonymous.
The voice of the weak that are unable to speak. The voice of those strong who are enslaved.
We are your voice. We are the 99%.
We do not forgive corruption. We do not forget mistreatment.
Wall Street, Expect us.

TARGET: nyse.com 10 October 3:30 PM EST

The Observer reached out to the NYSE and will update with their comment.

Anonymous also recently declared war on Facebook–or put a hit out on the social network, depending on how you look at it–set for November 5, Guy Fawkes day.

UPDATE: A commenter points us to another message also purporting to be from Anonymous: “Operation Invade Wall Street is bullshit! It is a fake planted operation by law enforcement and cyber crime agencies in order to get you to undermine the Occupy Wall Street movement. It proposes you use depreciated tools that have known flaws such as LOIC.”

The irony is concerning this group – the upcoming geological and solar storms might just do this for them

Adverb + adjective = no hyphen in between. Ex: typically terrible writing.

      where?

    It’s a trap, Anon announcement – http://pastebin.com/MCT1L3Kf

    1. Unite for freedom says:

And how do I know that your so-called announcement isn’t a fake? It could be disinformation put out by Wall Street banks to scuttle the protest. How do I know that it isn’t? Huh? HUH??

I’m gonna take my chances with action. Only a 1%er would propose that the 99% stay inactive in the face of corrupt cartel dictatorship.

This would be interesting if taking down their public facing web page meant anything. I seriously doubt whether they would be able to take down the NYSE trading platform as there are so many fail safes. I really don’t think Anon have any idea what type of complexity they are dealing with. Most likely they will just deface the public page and claim victory while not doing any real damage to NYSE or any major financial institution.

The real challenge would be to take down some major dark pools. That would seem to be right up their alley too.

  5. concerned says:

Anon has forgot about the 99% that have their retirement in stocks and bonds and taking down the NYSE, will hurt those this movement is suppose to be protecting and representing.  If you want to take down the 1%, go for it, but don’t hurt us in the process.

    1. Realistic Citizen says:

They don’t care about your retirement savings. Most of the protesters are unemployable and wouldn’t know or even care how hard people who work for a living have to work.

I thought it was hilarious when they got all excited about the rumor of the Marines, i.e. real men, at last coming to give their protest some credibility. The very same people who whined all the way through the last decade calling military members murderous war criminals, wishing so hard for the latter’s approval.

      1. reality check for a citizen says:

no one attacked our troops for what they were ordered to do.  anyhow.  most of the protesters are “unemployable?”  great way to think about fellow americans.  “Unemployable.”
        about marines… check Smedley Butler.

  6. I’m all for standing up for your beliefs and an individual’s right to express freely those beliefs. However, if the NYSE is hacked, not only could information be compromised, it’s the individual taxpayer’s stocks that would be affected. I’m hoping this is a scare tactic to put the NYSE on notice. Anonymous has a great following and a strong message, but that shouldn’t include martyring individual’s stocks and bonds to simply get a point across. Retirements were already pillaged earlier last year. Rethink the plan.

  7. Anonymous says:

Is this another “Fake” Anon attack a la the Faux Facebook Attack they are now disavowing everywhere?

Doodette, ur cred is at stake.

  8. Anonymous says:

Best part about Anon is that anyone can claim to be them.

“I’m Anonymous and I represent the “Mystery Men” of the interwebs.  Feel our wrath as we throw rotten cyber tomatoes at the NYSE website on Monday October 10th…MWUAHAHA.”

…Like the characters in the movie Mystery Men, Anon thinks they’re SO MUCH MORE THAN they really are!

  9. coach says:

any news on this?  it’s past the time.

    1. Anonymous says:

Yeah, more puffed-out chests of 90-pound weaklings.

Anon are truly “Mystery Men”…like the characters of that movie, they think they are SO much more than they really are.
