Tumblr Installs a Groupon, Yahoo Vet as Head of Global Sales

Operation: Get Money seems to be proceeding apace at Tumblr, as the company builds out its advertising offerings and its team to manage them. The latest development: the hiring of a new head of global sales. Lee Brown, who starts work on September 17, will report directly to motorcyclist-in-chief David Karp.

Mr. Brown’s background in digital ad sales is nothing to sneeze at. Previously Groupon’s SVP of national sales, he was one of a number of recent, high-profile departures from the beleaguered daily deals site, which just seems snakebit lately. Before that, he spent a decade at Yahoo, serving in a number of positions.  Read More

This Is the Kind of Advertising David Karp Likes

Once upon a time (by which we mean a few months ago), Tumblr CEO David Karp outright rejected the idea of ads. The scorn has lessened since the advent of sponsorship packages to the Tumblr Radar, but that doesn’t mean Mr. Karp has entirely come around to the inherent worthiness of advertising as a discipline.

This morning’s Internet Week keynote offered a little more insight into what he likes and what he doesn’t. To wit: None of your tacky traditional advertising, thanks. Tumblr wants “creative experiences.”

In a conversation with Internet Week founder David-Michel Davies, Mr. Karp elaborated on the kind of promotional content that doesn’t turn his stomach. As an ideal, he offered up the example of the Hunger Games promotion Capital Couture. Rather than registering hungergames.tumblr.com and slapping up the trailer, the film’s marketing team created a Panem fashion blog and invited fan submissions. Read More

Tumblr HQ Heads to Medieval Times

Well, we can’t say we didn’t warn you. Earlier this week, Tumblr community coordinator Annie Werner told us that through the company’s “Refer Madness” program, a few employees had combined their bonuses in order to take the entire Tumblr team to nerd-friendly eatery Medieval Times. Tumblr Ready to Make Nice With Outside Developers, Seeks API Liaison

One team of unaffiliated mobile developers became Tumblr’s Richmond office after building a bangin’ third party app. But other independent developers working with Tumblr from the outside have had less luck. That includes Jeremy Culter, whose popular “Missing e” extension is a thorn in Tumblr’s side, and Windows Phone developer Steven Pears, who tumbled heartbreakingly about lack of communication with the Tumblr team. Mr. Pears’s story prompted a mea culpa from Tumblr founder David Karp back in November: “We’ve been letting down our developer community,” the founder wrote. Mr. Karp cited the lack of dedicated developer support.
