Rumor Roundup: Tim Cook Tweets, Miley Hates iOS 7 and AlleyNYC Parties Hard

#sports, yall

#FollowFriday Well, well, well–look who’s on Twitter! Apple CEO Tim Cook took the bluster out of everyone’s #FF today and tweeted for the first time.

Internet sleuths hopped on the case, parsing the clues to determine whether the profile (“Fan of Auburn football and Duke basketball,” his bio reads), was the real deal. Two Apple employees and a Twitter worker were Mr. Cook’s first follows, for instance, but he also followed Anderson Cooper and Kings of Leon. What did it all mean?? Rumor Roundup: Kim Kardashian Might Have the New iPhone and Alexis Ohanian Bros Out

Screenshot_2013-09-13-10-36-53

Selfie study Kim Kardashian could be in possession of the just-announced iPhone 5s, or sunlight could’ve just made her black iPhone look grey. Tech!

Refinery29 spotted a photo uploaded to Ms. Kardashian’s Instagram in which the iPhone that appears looks mysteriously like the Space Gray color the new iPhone 5s will be offered in. That wouldn’t be too much of a surprise, given Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak was one of the first non-Kardashian humans to visit baby North West. But let’s not kid ourselves: it’s been awhile since Mr. Wozniak had any sort of insider pull at Apple and he’s going to be waiting in line for the iPhone 5s just like everyone else.

We’ll chalk this one up to a suspicious choice in filter. Read More

Rumor Roundup: The Winklevoss Twins Do Burning Man and Zady Has a Launch Party

Screen Shot 2013-09-06 at 4.09.32 PM

Fashion, turn to the left Wednesday night, Betabeat ventured down to the Bowery for a party celebrating the launch of Zady, the anti-fast-fashion startup founded by Soraya Darabi and Maxine Bédat. Attendees tended toward the leggy, and the bar was serving “moonshine” cocktails. At one point, we watched a meticulous mustachioed man line up an iPhone shot of a piece of paper on the wall, printed with the party’s official hashtag.

“‘Stealth’ mode is such a terrible word,” said Ms. Bédat (a patterned clutch from their holiday line-up tucked under her arm) when we asked about the company’s hush-hush birth. “Working on things quietly!” she corrected. Read More

Rumor Roundup: Dennis Crowley Crows About Cake and Kevin Rose’s Tattoos Are No More

photo (2)

Cake, cake, cake. Sorry haters, but Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley is going to have his cake and eat too. He shared a cryptic photo of a half-eaten “Dreaming Princess” cake proclaiming that the days of Foursquare are sweeter than ever.

Perhaps he’s right! The company did announce an innovative new feature that automatically sends you texts and rumors are swirling that Microsoft wants to take a chunk of the company. But, if we’re believing caption, he’s not going to tell us for another three months. Please, someone remind us to check in with that. Read More

Rumor Roundup: Kim Kardashian and Kevin Systrom Chill in the Dark and Sheryl Sandberg’s $11M Bunker

(Photo: Instagram)

Cooling with Kim This past weekend saw an unprecedented (but totally welcome) spike in news stories pertaining to both Instagram and the Kardashian Krew, much to our delight. Saturday night, Kim Instagrammed a candid-looking-but-probably-posed selfie of herself and Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom, captioned “Chilling with the creator of Instagram @kevin.” Are the two BFFs now?

More importantly: Second to grandma’s talkshow Kris, the photo-sharing service was one of the first places an official photo of baby Nori was distributed. Take that, Anna Wintour.

Anyway, the pair look like they’re in a closet playing a game of Seven Minutes in Heaven. Read More

The CEO exit Marissa Mayer, the flaxen-haired Yahoo CEO with the machine gun giggle, got the feature treatment in the September issue of Vogue. JOBS After much anticipation and even more blather about how Ashton Kutcher prepared for his role as the founder of Apple, Betabeat finally got a peak at Jobs earlier this week, at a special screening at the MoMa.

Outside, we watched Josh Gad (who plays Steve Wozniak) stroll up and start taking photos with waiting fans. He was followed by Matt McGorry, a.k.a Officer Bennett from Orange is the New Black. Apparently Arianna Huffington and Nicky Hilton were also in attendance. Read More

Game of Groans Photos from Sean Parker’s Big Sur wedding bash have finally hit the Internet, and they reveal an orgiastic confluence of fur, velvet, coattails, middle-parts and castoff costumes from A Knight’s Tale. Famous people and tech luminaries were abundant, but Mark Zuckerberg declined to attend, VF reports. He probably realized in advance that photos of him dressed as Read More

Rumor Roundup: Uber Delivers Ice Cream to the (Sorta) Stars, Today Tries Glass, and What Happened in Iceland?

Memories Earlier this week, Thrillist CEO Ben Lerer sat down to a breakfast at Balthazar (as one does). There he was, (presumably) minding his own business, when out of nowhere a pain au chocolat arrived with an ominous note on the house stationary: “I Know What You Did In Reykjavik.” The author signed the note with only a question mark. Rumor Roundup: Alexis Ohanian Took a Trip to the Jersey Shore and Lo Bosworth Popped by Mashable, Of All Places

Cooling Last month, Tumblr CEO David Karp sallied forth to the Cannes Lions festival/advertising love-in, as part of a charm offensive meant to convince potential clients they should flog their brands on the social network.

He also took the time to sit down beachside with an NBC anchor, singing the praises of fancy-pants advertising: “If you took all the ads out of Vogue, one it would be a much smaller magazine, but two it would be much less the magazine. those ads are great content, they’re a big part of the experiences,” he said. “What we’re here this week to do is to push more of those most creative advertisers to make ads that make Tumblr better, that make for more great, fun stuff on Tumblr to enjoy.”

He looked like the frontman for an early 2000s indie rock band making an appearance on an MTV Spring Break special, which is a great little symbol for how users are going to flip if they decide Tumblr’s selling out. Read More
