At Long Last, Tumblr Has Decent Search Functionality

Get ready to FREEBASE some Sherlock fan art.

For most of Tumblr’s history, attempts to search the site have been frustrating and often just plain fruitless. It really took a lot of dedication to keep up with the erotic Optimus Prime fanfic community, you know?

But it looks like the company finally invested some effort into fixing this particular feature. Tumblr announced today the site’s search functionality “has been rebuilt, front to back, to help explore all of your 65 billion(!) posts.” Read More

Tumblr Gifmeister and Early Employee Topherchris Is Leaving

(Tumblr)

Another early Tumblr employee hit the road today. Christopher Price, better known by his Internet alias topherchris, just announced that he’s leaving the site after “precisely 1,540 days.”

Mr. Price started using the site about a week into its existence, then joined the team in April 2009 as “editorial director.” “The kids in charge over at Tumblr HQ have decided to offer me the esteemed position of Editorial Director,” he wrote at the time. “This is truly an honor and delightful surprise, since I didn’t even know they could afford a paid staff, let alone health insurance.” Read More

David Karp Wants to Talk About Drones, Not Boring Stuff Like ‘How We Run the Company’

tumblr_me4a4pkx1w1qazkdco1_500

This week’s New York is a roundup of “brands” that have boomed since the 2008 crash, which can also be read as a bleak treatise on our dystopian age. (Imagine a world where the best economic prospect for a single mom working at Red Lobster is a deformed cat… who becomes a star!) Among the honorees: Tumblr, of course.

The mag sat down with the site’s freshly flush young founder and discovered that he is not shy about letting you see that he is so, so bored right now: Read More

Now that Tumblr’s been welcomed into Yahoo’s purple bosom, David Karp’s days of wheedling venture capitalists are over. If the company hadn’t sold, though, Mr. Karp would’ve been doing a lot of door-knocking with his hat out, because it turns out the company had just $16.6 million left at acquisition. (It’s also a question just how much ads were bringing in.)

Pretty sure there are rinky-dink jungle airstrips with longer runways. Read More

Tumblr Asked You to Reset Your Password Because of a Pretty Embarrassing Security Hole

eeeeeeesh (Photo by Andrew Burton/Getty Images)

Last night, Tumblr product VP Derek Gottfrid posted a rather alarming communique to its users, far from the usual omg-we’re-just-so-darn-happy-to-announce gushing. “We have just released a very important security update for our iPhone and iPad apps addressing an issue that allowed passwords to be compromised in certain circumstances¹. Please download the update now,” the post read, emphasis theirs. Read More

David Karp’s in Cannes, Partying With Diddy and Calling Rivals’ Practice ‘Gross’

Golden boy. (Photo by Jemal Countess/Getty Images)

Right now the “Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity,” which is of course a big cushy self-congratulatory bash for advertisers, is in full swing. And so Tumblr founder/apparent Mad Men devotee David Karp is in town, wooing potential clients.

He took the time to toot Tumblr’s own horn and trash its rivals. The Guardian reports that in a seminar, he condemned follower counts (you listening, Twitter?), which he finds just so déclassé: Read More

Another Early Tumblr Employee Departs: ‘Media Evangelist’ Mark Coatney Leaves

Mr. Coatney (Photo: Twitter)

Tumblr “director/media evangelist” Mark Coatney, one of the company’s early employees and the man who built the site’s outreach team, just announced that he’s leaving the company. For those keeping score at home, that’s right on the heels of creative director Jacob Bijani’s departure.

Mr. Coatney didn’t detail his reasons for leaving in the announcement on his Tumblr, other than to say, “It’s a a good time, with Tumblr moving into a new and even better stage with Yahoo, and though I’m happy about the decision and excited about new opportunities, it’s still bittersweet.” Read More
