Last week I was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard (where WWII battleships were once manufactured) to check out Beta Space, a precursor to New Lab, an advanced manufacturing hub and high-tech design + prototyping center slated to open in 2015. It'll anchor a 220,000 sq ft Green Manufacturing Center (backed by $46 million from the city and state). With MakerBot cranking out 3D printers in downtown Brooklyn and Shapeways building the Factory of the Future in Queens, it feels like a new kind of manufacturing renaissance is under way in our city. Exciting times!

Also at the Yard is Steiner Studios (the largest sound stage on the east coast). Last week at NY Ideas, NYC Film Commissioner Katherine Oliver commented on how increasingly more shows were being shot in the city, apparently including a series set in Chicago.

Mayor Bloomberg and the NYCEDC recently launched a prototyping competition, where six lucky winning teams will get an opportunity to prototype new products while receiving studio space from sponsor NYDesigns and mentorship from industry leaders Shapeways, Adafruit Industries, and Honeybee Robotics. Alison Hodgson and Miquela Craytor from the NYCEDC will be at the Hardware Startup Meetup today to explain the competition and take any questions.

The Worldwide Investor Network (WIN) is organizing a two-day conference this Tuesday (November 13-14), bringing together ten tech startups from around the world intimately engaging and pitching to the New York venture community. Speakers include David Teten (ff Ventures), Habib Kairouz (Rho Capital), Ed Sim (BOLDstart Ventures) and Kirill Sheynkman (RTP Ventures). The Partnership for New York City Fund and Accenture have announced a search for top fintech innovators who will work with global financial institutions to bring their ideas to market. Winning companies will be part of the FinTech Innovation Lab, a 12-week program that helps early and growth-stage fintech innovators accelerate product development and gain exposure to top-level financial industry executives. Applications are due by December 19.

New York City recently announced the H.E.L.M. (Hire Expand in Lower Manhattan) contest, its latest initiative to bring more startups into Manhattan’s growing tech scene, which promises up to $1.2 million in funds to startups looking to reside in Lower Manhattan. Applications are due by noon on November 30. And there'll be an event this Thursday where you can mingle with the judges including Reddit's Alexis Ohanian, restauranteur Danny Meyer 'n others.

This Saturday is AngelHack (which is putting together one of the biggest hackathons ever) and they will be donating 100 percent of the proceeds from here out to Sandy relief efforts.

Heard of 37 Angels? They're a community of women investors committed to funding early-stage startups. This Thursday they're organizing a pitch event at NYU with five to eight cross-sector pitches.

Next week, Ray Kurzweil, the bold futurist and author of the bestseller The Singularity Is Near, will explore the limitless potential of reverse-engineering the human brain to create more intelligent machines. You can't miss that!

The Uncubed tech talent fair is back, but this time it's taken on some major partners and expanded into a two-day, tech celeb-studded event plus awesome party.

As we told you back in April, NYC Uncubed is an initiative that seeks to buck traditional recruitment tactics in favor of innovative new ways for startups to recruit talent. Now, Uncubed has partnered with NYC Digital to host a tech festival on November 1st and 2nd November 12th and 13th* at the Altman Building in Manhattan.

The first day, called Scout, will be "for startups looking for talent and talented people looking for startups." Aside from having over 60 recruitment booths, there will also be classes and workshops, talks and stories by tech experts and a paper napkin pitch session. Also, because this is Startupland, there will be a ping pong tournament and a latte art battle.

The second day, Scale, will be for "startups looking to grow and brands looking to learn and collaborate." It's jam-packed with storytelling and talks from a slew of NYC tech luminaries like Scott Heiferman, Ricky Van Veen, Gary Vaynerchuck, Neil Blumanthal, Rachel Hoat and Jessica Lawrence.

The official afterparty will be DJ'd by Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem and Chris Keating of Yeasayer because of course.

Tickets for day one are $20 and for day two are $50. Sign up quickly for an earlybird discount, since next week they'll go up in price.

WAITING ROOM. ZocDoc just became active in Austin, the company's 16th market. Available to over one-third of the U.S. population, ZocDoc is continuing its mission to make scheduling doctor's appointments really fucking easy with well over one million unique visitors each month.

DINERO. Integrate, a New York-based company that helps businesses "plan, execute, track, analyze and optimize their multi-channel marketing strategy" just raised $11 million in Series B funding. Comcast Ventures and Liberty Global joined Foundry Group, a repeat investor.

VERTICAL BUZZ. Last week BuzzFeed launched two new verticals—Sports with Jack Moore and Kevin Lincoln and Shift, aimed at female readers, with Amy Odell of New York Magazine.

MEASURE UP. Harvard Business School bffs Christina Wallace and Alex Nelson are tall girls who were looking for tall girl pants. Enter their new fashion startup, Quincy, which rethinks women's apparel sizing by assigning sizes based on bust and height. The site launched yesterday with a collection of five blazers, and will roll out more highly-tailored items over the coming months.

FLEXIBLE. The new DUMBO Startup Lab at 68 Jay St. is giving membership to those who qualify. Members can choose to  lay down a "stationary" workspace starting at $400 per month. "Portable" work space is $200 per month and everyone has 24-hour access to conference space, mentorship and advice from DUMBO Startup Lab pros.

SHOPTIME STORIES. In January, we told you about an as-yet-unnamed store in Chelsea that was selling online goods from startups like Birchbox, Artspace and Quirky offline for limited time. Well, founder and merchandising whiz Rachel Shechtman who likes to call her company, "a retail space that has the point of view of a magazine, changes like a gallery and sells things like a store," has given her shop a name, Story. Starting yesterday, Story opened its doors for its second "issue," and startups are once again on display. This time the theme revolves around color with items from BaubleBar, CHROMATICgallerie, StyleMint (the Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen brand), and more and will be open daily until Tuesday, May 22nd.

DJ DROID. Last week Songza, the company behind the mobile app that helps users find and make playlists based on mood, time of day and other variables, released an iOS app update, adding to their new Music Concierge feature. The update is designed to help users find the tunes they're in the mood for easily and faster. With no fees, limits or commercials, it looks like healthy competition for Pandora and Spotify.

BREAKAWAY. Startup Hockey is tonight at 95 5th Ave. on the fifth floor. Leave your skates at home though, all you need is your thumbs. The organizers also made "a half-hearted promise to schedule these further in advance."

CANDLE WIX. Wix is a site building tool "for the code inept." Earlier this week, Wix unveiled its HTML5 product, adding new functionality to the formerly flash-only platform. In addition to their web products, the Israel-based company also has the Wix Lounge in Union Square, a workspace for creatives. There's one in San Francisco, too.

WHISTLE WHILE YOU... Lot18 has openings for an account management intern, acquisition manager, marketing coordinator, user experience designer, director of engineering, front end developer and softwae engineer. Check out job descriptions here. 2tor is looking for a staff accountant with more than two years of experience and a strong basis in MS Office.
