Christian evangelist quarterback Tim Tebow set a new tweets-per-second record for a sports-related trending topic, Twitter said yesterday, with 9,420 tweets per second during the Sunday night Denver Broncos-Pittsburgh Steelers game.

The tweeting spiked after an 80-yard touchdown pass at the end of the game, reflective of the cheers and shouts in bars across the U.S. Betabeat was watching the game in one such bar in the East Village, where we were scrolling through Tebow tweets in real time. (We noticed something odd about game time tweets, which we had never experienced before: many of the tweets simply said "Tebow" or "Tim Tebow." Like, that is all they said. no commentary, no observations, no jokes. Can any of our sports tweeting readers explain?) However, there were plenty of tweets along the line of Lady Gaga's: "Giants fan but wow. #Tebow Thats what the fuck a champion looks like," she wrote.

According to Craig Kanalley at NBC News:

The previous sports record was 7,196 tweets/second after Japan defeated the United States in a women's World Cup match, USA Today reports. Tebow's touchdown even topped Beyonce's announcement that she was pregnant at the MTV Music Awards, which led to 8,868 tweets/second...

Even so, Tebow didn't set the all-time tweets/second record, as a Japanese movie prompted 25,088 tweets/second in December, per The Next Web.

Mr. Tebow himself, who has more than 914,000 followers, managed to avoid dropping his own name.
