News of the first annual Objectify a Male Tech Writer Day swept across the web this morning following an article penned by one of the event's founders, gaming and social media reporter Leigh Alexander. "From booth babes to harassment, snide comments to double standards, women have often had a hard time feeling comfortable around the tech industry," she wrote. In order to demonstrate "the absurdity of objectifying people you claim to agree with or support intellectually," she's encouraging female tech writers to give gendered compliments or make sexist proclamations to men about their work.

Though the actual Objectify a Male Tech Writer Day isn't until February 1st, Betabeat--comprised primarily of female writers--could hardly contain ourselves. Here are 25 gendered comments for 25 of our favorite male tech writers.

Walt Mossberg: What's a pretty face like yours doing buried in those product specs?

Just when you thought CES couldn't get any randomer than Qualcomm's "Generation Mobile" atrocity, guess who showed up? Bill Clinton, who stopped by to speak in the middle of Samsung president Stephen Woo's presentation. Not only that, but according to CNET's liveblog, in the midst of his remarks he digressed and started talking about gun control.

The man used to be the leader of the free world; you really thought he'd get on stage at a trade show and stick to the subject? Child, please.

Mr. Clinton's appearance seemed a little random, but his philanthropic work involves attempts to close the technology gap between richer and poor countries, and he's specifically partnered with Samsung to work on the issue. Also, as much money as they've got flowing around that conference, why not hire a former president to speak?

And yes, he did start out on the topic of technology: "On the day I took the oath of office, a grand total of 50 sites on the entire Internet," he opened, before tacking toward the reason for his presence in Las Vegas, reminding everyone that poor countries need tech for things other than Evernote-integrated fridges.

That's when he started to drift. CNET says Mr. Clinton started talking about bad things that've happened all over the world, but like a record hitting a scratch, he got hung up on "unjustifiable neglect of gun safety":

Clinton talking about gun control and the death rate in the U.S. compared to other countries. "I grew up in this hunting culture, but this is nuts," Clinton says. "Why does anybody need a 30-round clip for a gun?" Half of all deaths have occurred since the assault weapons ban expired, Clinton offers.

Apparently he got a huge round of applause, then meandered through a discussion of anomie: "We have sorted ourselves out in our living patterns so that we look for people who agree with us," he said. Then finally he circled back to the topic at hand, by saying he wants technologists to find ways to bridge that gap.

Stay roguish, Bill. Never change.

Apparently Boston wasn't the only town a little put off by the AP's flattering article about New York's burgeoning tech scene. Take this response, which appeared earlier this week in the Houston Business Journal. Upon hearing about our fair city's recent investments, the reporter couldn't help wonder: “Does this mean Houston has more competition in terms of trying to be the next Silicon Valley?"

The Journal spoke to Brad Burke, the managing director of the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, who promptly attempted to set the minds of Houston's techie citizens at rest:

"One of the advantages of Houston is the breadth of industries here. We have such a strong life science, energy, nanotechnology and information technology (presence) here,” Burke said. “Also, New York has an inherent problem. The cost of doing business is so expensive, and Houston is a much more business-friendly environment.”

It's certainly true that building some enormous facility downtown is a tough row to hoe. Then again, maybe having to get by on a shoestring budget is good for nascent companies.

But then Mr. Burke really showed his claws:

Also, Burke said he found it most interesting that New York has just recently decided to start building a technology presence, while cities like Houston have been working on it for 10 to 15 years.

Now, what does this sound like to you?

One recent morning, 14 job candidates filed into his fourth-floor office in Alexandria, Virginia, where a wiffle ball net is stowed in the lobby and a pirate flag hangs in the conference room. How many might he hire? “Fourteen, if we like them all,” he said.

If you guessed "a venture-backed consumer Internet startup," you are incorrect. (Thanks for playing; better luck next time.)

That sentence was written by Bloomberg regarding Targeted Victory, which is not, as you might expect from that name, a maker of drones but rather a tech startup / political consulting firm, working to help elect Mitt Romney president.

And it looks like that company sure has stumbled onto a lucrative niche:

Federal candidates and super-PACs have spent more than $46 million so far this election cycle for the services of just three firms -- Targeted Victory and the two major Democratic tech operations, Blue State Digital and Bully Pulpit Interactive, according to a Center for Responsive Politics analysis of Federal Election Commission reports conducted for Bloomberg News.

And what are the various political campaigns getting in exchange for all that cash? Glad you asked. Companies help with things like, oh, online advertising and digital databases and social media and such. You know, your basic product peddling:

“Every online technique used by Fortune 500 companies will be in the hands of politicians in the next four to eight years.”

We should probably be very concerned about the more Orwellian implications of this. But mostly we're wondering whether this means Mitt Romney's face is about to start following us around the Internet like that Lands' End dress we looked at last week.

Congrats to Greg Galant and Lee Semel for another amazing edition of the Shorty Awards ("Oscars for social media peeps"). In case you missed it, here's my blog post with the highlights.

Dave McClure and the folks at 500 Startups are organizing a one-day conference called Mama Bear (yep, thats whats its called) for startups, platforms, and thought leaders to explore new technology for moms, kids and families (which is a whopping $2.1 trillion market).

On April 15, Brooklyn Law School's Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy (aka BLIP) is hosting their first ever "Legal Hackathon," an all-day event featuring a bunch of interesting panels & workshops with speakers including Tim Wu, Art Chang, Andrew Rasiej, professor Jonathan Askin and others.

For the hardcore partier, I've put together what I think is the definitive and best List of SXSW Interactive Parties (225+ and counting!). Print this out for ur trip and you're golden, my friend. And as you can see, there're a ton of events that don't even require a SXSW badge. Awesome sauce indeed!

SXSW is now less than 5 days away. And my Definitive List of SXSW Interactive Parties has now grown to over 225 and counting! Yes, srsly folks, that is 225 parties in 5 days. :) And I am still getting emails from event organizers announcing new parties every other hour. So stay tuned!

As a wise man once said ... the best way to prepare for the crazy, chaotic world of people, panels & parties, that is SXSW, would be to ... well, throw a bunch of pre-parties, of course! Which is exactly what New Yorkers are doing this week. Cuz-we-just-cant-wait-to-get-the-party-started! ;)
