I'm a big fan of organizations and groups that encourage more women to get involved in the traditionally male-dominated worlds of tech and entrepreneurship, by creating community and providing guidance and support. And this week, we have a ton of these women-focused events.

There is the Ladies Who Code hacknight, where they encourage you to bring your brilliant self, your laptop,  and your beloved text-editor of choice! There is Celebrating Extraordinary Female Founders at Levo League (a site for Gen Y female professionals), as well as the launch party for PlumAlley (a new site supporting female-founded companies). There is the Go Connect - Ignite Your Ambition event organized by NY Tech Women and The White House Project. There is JumpStart Your Dreams, organized by She Creates Change (a community supporting women as they make their professional dreams a reality). And finally there's Women 2.0 Founder Friday, with guest hosts Alexis Tryon (cofounder, Artsicle) and Anagha Nadkarni (cofounder, AppGuppy).

Speaking of women in tech, there are two upcoming events that should be on your radar. My friend Dani, the founder of DaniWeb (a million-member-strong IT discussion community), is throwing a big party next month on October 2nd. So go check it out! :) Second is Focus100, a conference and boot camp on October 5th, organized by Kathryn Finney (founder, DigitalUndivided) and supported by BlogHer and Andreessen Horowitz. The event aims to get 100 companies founded or cofounded by black women to raise funding or get acquired by 2015.

Also: The deadline for voting on panels submitted for SXSW 2013 has been extended until midnight tonight, and so you still have a chance to help out your fellow Silicon Alley friends. Here's the list of panels we've compiled. Show some love with your votes!

R.I.P. and Godspeed, Neil Armstrong--a pioneering astronaut, American icon and international hero, who on July 20, 1969, became the first man to set foot on the moon, making history and instilling a deep sense of pride in every man, woman and child on earth. As Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted: "Neil Armstrong was the spiritual repository of spacefaring dreams & ambitions. In death, a little bit of us all dies with him."

Photo-sharing apps may be hot, but what's even sexier are startups that bring home the bacon. That's the basic premise behind 500 Startups' unSEXY, a 1-day conference, which covers verticals such as financial services, communications, email, data, infrastructure and more. It's all about tech startups and companies who are actually doing something incredibly sexy--they’re building scalable, sustainable businesses. So if you're in the Bay Area next week, definitely go check it out!

So you all probably know about the High Line. But have you heard about the LowLine? Cofounders Dan Barasch and James Ramsey are aiming to convert an abandoned trolley terminal beneath Delancey Street into an extraordinary subterranean public park. That's right--it's an economic revitalization opportunity.

But it's more than that. It also represents cutting-edge design and a new generation of green technology and  lies at the heart of a broader global discussion about the potential of remnant urban infrastructure and the need for cities to reinvent the meaning of space--above and below ground.

I've always been a big fan of Dave McClure, and that's even more true after reading his recent blog post, a wonderfully honest, inspiring, straight-from-the-heart outpouring of his experiences and the ups and downs of life in Silicon Valley. Definitely a must-read.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned how the NY Tech Meetup had spawned tech meetups all over the city from Long Island City (Queens) and Dumbo (Brooklyn) to Hoboken (New Jersey) and even as far as Stamford (Connecticut). In a similar vein, there are now tech breakfasts sprouting up everywhere.

It started off with the Dumbo Tech Breakfast (organized by James Dennis and Sean O'Connor). Now there's one on the Upper West Side, another in the Village (this week on Friday) and, starting next week, a new one on the Upper East Side. Tech breakfasts are a terrific way to connect with other tech peeps in your n'hood in a more casual environment. So go check them out and maybe even start one yourself!

There have been plenty of hackathons happening in the city over the last year or so--photo hackathons, video hackathons, local hackathons, gov hackathons, you name it. Hackathons are awesome and really help spur creativity and enable the building of cool stuff. And, for folks who have full-time jobs but are intrigued by entrepreneurship, this is a good way to dip their toes into the startup pool.
