Startup Summer, an internship program that matches local public high school students with internships at New York tech companies, is in its second year. The program is open to members of the New York Tech Meetup, "the monthly nexus for emerging Silicon Alley talent," in its own words, who must apply by May 20 to have their companies included.

Interns went to Meetup.com, Angelsoft, Drop.io, Livestream, Africa.com, Magnify, Personal Democracy Forum, Aviary and Indaba Music last year.

The NYTM Startup Summer runs from July 5th through August 12th. The interns make $10 an hour, 30 hours a week--the cost is shared between start-ups and sponsors, with start-ups contributing the bulk at $1,350 per intern. "While exact details will depend on the company placement, students will engage in a wide variety of technical projects, including web design and development, marketing, sales and community management. They will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated technology mentor and gain hands-on experience within an exciting and innovative technology company," a press release says. The student application is here.

Last year's interns had skills ranging from Microsoft Word and "downloading and installing software" to PHP and MySQL. The interns are screened by Futures and Options, a nonprofit that connects socioeconomically disadvantaged students with paid internships. NYTM has also partnered with Camp Interactive and MOUSE, two local non-profits that connect underserved communities with tech-based programs. AT&T and Microsoft are sponsoring the Startup Summer program.
