Because Angel Investors Can Live In Dorms Too The New York tech scene can never have too many venture capitalists, but sometimes it can be difficult for student entrepreneurs to bridge the age gap between themselves and their investors. Enter the Dorm Room Fund, an investment team started by firm First Round Capital, which is run and composed entirely of students. With $500,000 provided by First Round, the student members of the Dorm Room Fund can choose which student projects to invest in, as well as who will be accepted to be a board member of the investment team when other members graduate. After last year's debut in Philadelphia, the Dorm Room Fund is expanding to New York, and will be accepting applications to its board from Columbia, NYU, Princeton, and Cornell's tech campus until March 11, and has already begun accepting applications for student startups seeking investment at these schools.

Warby Parker Gets Another Round of Funding With Google Glass on everyone's mind, the news of online eyewear distributor Warby Parker's new funding successes was a little swept under the rug. But Monday's announcement of new investments from American Express and J. Crew chief executive Millard S. Drexler is just another sign that the New York startup, which lets you "try on" glasses online, could be a serious challenger to the physical eyewear market. Wonder who might want to partner with them? (Hint: we already mentioned them.)

Once Again, Please Stop Paying For Cable If you're a twenty something New Yorker, chances are that somewhere along the way to your $12oo-a-month Bushwick apartment you sacrificed paying for cable. Well you can stop pirating all your favorite shows, because Aereo announced on Monday that it's expanding its live video streaming service beyond the five boroughs to more than 19 million people in the surrounding New York metropolitan area. The cloud/DVR's access area will now encompass 29 counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York. The company will also be rolling out a new multi-million dollar ad campaign in the New York area, highlighted by the tagline, “Live TV. Online. No Cable Required.” Although only 30 channels are provided now, the company hopes to rapidly expand in the near future.

This Definitely Isn't Your Childhood Summer QAmp Although its not always the flashiest part of a tech company, the quality assurance (QA) section is necessary for any tech company wishing to release a quality, glitch-free product. And to that end, SummerQAmp, an education initiative started by a number of companies, will return this summer to provide students with internship opportunities at tech companies across the country in the field of quality assurance. The QA department is often viewed as just a place for product testing, but SummerQAmp aims to change that. Of course, no matter how you spin it, an internship consisting of continuously opening and closing an app doesn't exactly sound like a dream vaca.

Aggregation Just Got Even More Ridiculous With Movie App "Clinch" If you've never heard of Clinch, the movie making app, which was released last year, creates films using a users' video and combining it with multiple sources such as other users', media. Well now Clinch will be updating their app this Monday with a new user interface that focuses on integrating videos and photos from Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sources, as well as improving upon its proprietary algorithms for creating spliced videos. Because people don't already hate when their writing is aggregated, so why not start doing the same with videos as well?

Bloomberg Wants All Our Children To Be Nerds New York mayor Michael Bloomberg sure has been on a tech tear recently. Last week he announced his Made in NYC campaign to help New York tech startups, and on Monday he revealed that 20 New York high schools and middle schools will receive “comprehensive computer science and software engineering curriculum” as part of the city's new Software Engineering Pilot (SEP) program. The program will begin with 1,000 students and expand to 3,500 students by 2016, though it remains to be seen whether this program will finally unify the jocks and geeks on the high school popularity spectrum.

The Bronx And Staten Island Are Some Of Klutziest Cities In America In another sign that Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens are the only boroughs worth living in New York, consumer electronic trade-in site Gazelle recently announced the ten klutziest cities in America, and the Bronx came in at fourth and Staten Island placed ninth. The numbers, based on the percentage of electronic devices the site received from each city that were either cracked, dented or water-damaged, found that Tallahassee, Florida was the worst offender in the U.S., followed by New Orleans (in fact, the South dominated the list with six of the ten spots.) As it comes to no one's surprise, the site receives plenty of broken phones, and has decided to run a "Broken Phone Stories" contest in order to discover the best broken phone story in the country.

Game Over? There seems to be a mass exodus at Zynga. It was reported yesterday that Wilson Kriegel, the former chief revenue officer of Omgpop, has now left the company. In the last 30 days, the company has lost its COO, CCO, and two vice presidents. Maybe it's time for them to "draw something" different, like a new management plan.

A New Hope? In much better Zynga news, the company has partnered with Food Network's Robert Irvine to help beef up its Chefville game. Mr. Irvine has introduced a series of challenges to help improve the game where you run your own restaurant. "I couldn't be more honored to have an avatar of myself and Restaurant: Impossible be a part of ChefVille," Robert Irvine said in a press release. "As we lend insight to players on what it takes to create their dream restaurant while earning my approval."

Do It Live Livestream, the live video streaming service, announced full access to its suite of live video and live blogging tools. The suite includes encoding software for Mac and PC, ad-free event pages and mobile broadcasting to the web from their Livestream for Producers iPhone app. No ads during a broadcast? Perhaps they've been inspired by Occupy Wall Street's Ustream'er Tim Pool.

Oh You Fancy Huh? Just in time for Christmas shoppers who like to get stuff done early, Fancy has just launched a group gifting platform that allows users to create a gift, invite others to contribute to it, then sends the gift to the recipient. They've also announced a partnership with American Express to help designers like Prabal Gurung sell their goods on Fancy, while giving buyers rewards like cash back for big purchases.

Droid BFF's Sonar, the friend-finding app with the cute submarine mascot, just launched a version for Android. Along with the Android release, Sonar is adding six more language options to the app. The startup also slipped in a version of the android mascot (Andy Roid) into their app to chat with new users.

Tha Envelope Plz The Webby Awards have announced some new judges for this year's ceremony including Rachel Sterne and David Karp. Other new influencers on the panel include OK Go's lead singer Damien Kulash and Laughing Squid founder Scott Beale. Sounds viral enough to us.

Not Soup In case you weren't subscribed to enough luxury-lifestyle magazines, now there's DuJour. They already have three million subscribers through a glitzy partnership with Gilt Groupe. Their site is pretty glamorous and should trigger a consumerist impulse or two.

Get The Artists Rich Louis C.K.'s novel idea of independently selling tickets to his comedy shows has sparked a new venture called Artful.ly Open Source. It allows creators to sell tickets or accept donations without going through the big ticket companies or any expensive vendors. Quick, test it out before Dane Cook makes it uncool.

Ride or Die The team from Dwolla, the app that lets you send and receive money to other users, captured their ride in a special 1920's vehicle that was part of a promotion for HBO's Boardwalk Empire. The group told a passerby to download Uber in order to book his own ride in the car. We hope there was some sort of commission?

Opening Ceremony There hasn't been much fashion fun in tech since last year's Raise Cache fashion show, but now Opening Ceremony has partnered with Gin Lane Media to create an interactive iPad application as a companion piece to Opening Ceremony's new annual print magazine. Back to School It's September, which means the kids all over the country are hitting the books once more. Despite the gnashing of teeth over the importance of STEM education, however, many students are returning to schools with shaky or nonexistent computer science programs. That's where Codecademy comes in. The company recently debuted After School Programming, a package allowing schools to, at the very least, get an extracurricular club up and running.

Blammo Scrollkit, the service designed to make website creation easier for those without years of web design experience, has just added new effects for CSS3 and HTML5. DIY Mobile Brit + Co, the creators of recyclable wonders like the Hitch Clock (made from a repurposed DVD of the Will Smith movie), have now turned their DIY. blog--headed by creator Brit Morin--into an app. It's only available on iOS for now, but not to fear Android users! The site's mobile version was given a facelift as well, so you can still learn how to "make your cooler the coolest" while you're on the go.

No More Stealing Getty Images has partnered with SparkRebel, Pinterest's fashionable and celebrity-obsessed cousin, to create the terribly-titled PicScout ImageIRC. The two companies describe the new platform as "the world’s largest index of image fingerprints and metadata that assures every image gets its credit." In short, it's a legal way for SparkRebel to use Getty's images, while Getty's photographers get their much deserved credit and compensation. Win-win.

Bono Swag Knewton, the digital learning startup that just last year raised a $33 million Series D, is now one degree of separation closer to Bono and Bill Clinton, via their favorite policy stomping ground: The World Economic Forum. Perhaps you've heard of a small annual gathering they host called Davos? Knewton CEO Jose Ferreira is featured in a video posted this morning on the Forum's site discussing key educational challenges.

Who Gon Stop Me, Huh? HopStop recently passed two million total app downloads, only eight months after announcing one million total apps back in January of this year. The company also recently discontinued their Blackberry app, they say, "due to the complexity of maintaining native apps across several different mobile platforms (as well as due to the lack of advertiser demand for this particular platform)." The remaining Blackberry users left in New York can use HopStop via the mobile site of course.

A Nice Experience for U Usablenet, the creator of mobile and multi-channel experiences for brands, have built a new platform for for their services called U-Experience. If you take a look at UatFashionWeek.com from your mobile browser, you can see what the U-Experience is capable of--a seamless exposure to all of a brand's social media platforms at once in a tight-looking interface.

Ads Mean Money Republic Project, a service that lets anyone create mobile and web ad campaigns in about 45 minutes, has announced $1 million in Series A funding led by Google Ventures. 500 Startups, Venture51, Ludlow Ventures, Maneesh Arora and Andrew Reis also participated in the round. Their first big client is Capital One and they have established partnerships with Buzzfeed and Pandora.

Stay tuned Kickstarter announced via tweet yesterday that, starting this fall, U.K. residents will be able to use the crowdfunding platform to launch their own projects. Currently, although people anywhere can give money to projects on the site, only individuals based in the U.S. can launch projects and receive funding.

Advise away Tout’d, a new digital forum for personalized recommendations, launched last week. As a social media platform and referral space, the app for iOS and Android enables users to ask for advice from friends as well as share recommendations ranging from restaurants and gadgets to professional referrals.

Hackathon The photo editing app Aviary will host its third Photo Hack Day at Dropbox HQ in San Francisco this weekend. It’s free to register and attend, and the first place prize is $7,000. Additional prizes include a “New York Startup immersion” from Aviary, as well as $2500 in Facebook ad credits and free Facebook sweatshirts. There will also be a fireside chat, featuring Aviary CEO Avi Muchnick and Hipstamatic CEO Lucas Buick.

Just launched: Music Overture, an online community designed to help aspiring musicians network and showcase their talents. Though it would seem that something like this already exists, the creators urge potential users to “think online concert hall.”

Relaunched: Tripl's social travel application, which connected travelers to locals, has pivoted to become a sort of Facebook Timeline for your friends' trips. "Tripl figures out where your friends are traveling by filtering out all the geo data that is attached to photos, checkins, and statuses throughout your social networks and looking for changes in distance... The web app then combines all those data points with additional content about the destination like Wikipedia articles and stock photography," the company said in a press release. Tripl is currently enrolled in the Dreamit Accelerator program.

More social networks Wetradetogether, a social network designed for traders, financial advisors and individual investors, in poised to launch in the U.S. and Europe. The site consolidates features such as real-time streaming of financial data, sentiment indexes, advanced charting and collaborative workspaces to aid individuals and small businesses with independent online trading.

Pricey pics Short on cash? Now you can sell your iPhone photos for $10 a pop. Simply download Foap’s free app, upload photos from your iPhone albums and send them to Foap’s “experts” for approval.  The only catch: Foap pockets 50 percent of your profit on each image, and users are warned that images with heavy filters from Instagram and the like won’t be approved. But still!

Communal connectivity Open Garden, a free app for Android, Mac and PC that enables one gadget to share bandwidth connectivity with nearby devices, announced a new Wi-Fi Direct feature for Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” at Google I/O last week.

TV on the internet BuddyTV announced an update to their iOS app, which is now integrated with Facebook Open Graph--enabling users to share your ratings, favorite TV shows and movies and other app activities with Facebook friends.

Check-in Foursquare just launched their “Connected Apps” platform, which enables developers to build apps directly connected to Foursquare. Partners include The Weather Channel—now you can get the weather forecast with your first check-in to a new city—and Eat This, Not That, which tells you what dishes to order and avoid once you check-in to a particular restaurant.

Green apps Check out the winning apps from the city’s first sustainability hackathon, Reinvent Green. Try them out and vote for your favorite before July 15.

More data Chartbeat Publishing, a data analytics service for editors and publishers, just launched its Heads Up Display. Designed to give content producers immediate information on the health and user activity of their sites, the new display provides vitals to help editors understand which articles are driving site traffic, how quickly a particular story is accelerating or decelerating, and how far down on the page viewers are reading.

The site makes achieving your goals sound really easy by breaking them down into three steps: choosing from over 600 action plans (or making up your own), inviting your friends to “motivate and cheer you on,” and, finally, following the plan to accomplish your goal.

Keep running Fitocracy, the fitness social network that lets you track your workout progress and compete against your friends, has made some changes to their team. Cofounder and former CTO Richard Talens is now the Chief of Growth and Analytics, and senior engineer Daniel Roesler is stepping in as the new CTO. The company has also hired Jay Patel as a new backend developer.

New and improved The Tumblr app for iOS just got a makeover and is now faster and also looks better, with support for higher resolution photos as well as redesigned notification tabs which make navigation much easier. The improved app also includes offline support, which allows users to write blog posts, reblog, and leave comments while offline, which will be posted automatically the next time the iPhone connects to the Internet.

Perfect pitch The Harvard Business School Alumni Angels of Greater New York (HBSAANY) and the National Association of Investment Companies announced the finalists for their inaugural Venture Capital Access Program, intended to provide “women and diverse entrepreneurs” with access to venture capital through accredited investors. The six finalists, Castle Surgical, MetaLayer, Shadow Digital, Take the Interview, Tiger Trade, and Torsch, Inc. will present their to HBSAANY on Wednesday.

Better Homes and Gardens Hometalk, the online home and garden social network, just launched a redesign. The site also announced that it now has a community of over 100,000 homeowners, renters and home improvement professionals.

Hablo espanol ZocDoc en Espanol launched last week, providing Spanish-speaking users with a free online service that helps find nearby Spanish-speaking doctors and dentists and book appointments.

TC Disrupt NYC 2012

The News In News It's a big day for Qwiki. When last we heard from the company, Qwiki was turning info from Wikipedia and elsewhere into multimedia visual presentations. After a brief period in San Francisco, the company has returned to New York City and adapted its technology to the news business. Today comes the announcement of the "Qwiki Creator," which turns web content--video and static pages--into a rich content presentation. Qwiki's partner for the launch? ABC News. Not too shabby.

Shop Right New to digital shopping list Ziplist: a free Meal Planner, a queue designed to act as a "Netflix for things you want to make sometime soon," the company says. Users can save recipes to specific days with an eye to when they'll have more or less prep time, then they can add the necessary ingredients to their shopping list. The planner can also be synced with family members' calendars. The planner, by the way, is the company's first big featured released since its Conde Nast acquisition.

Accepting applications The inaugural class of healthcare accelerator Blueprint Health is off and running. Organizers report that teams have already raised $4 million in seed capital. But time and tide wait for no entrepreneur, and so applications are now open for the second class, which launches July 23. Early-stage healthcare startups in search of mentors and money should investigate.

Park It Now available for download in the App Store: A social network for parking. Yes, you read that right. KurbKarma aims to disrupt parking by allowing peer-to-peer coordination, enabling users to find and even reserve available spots. The company is launching in San Francisco and New York, naturally.

Call Me Maybe AskYourUsers.com, which connects consultant-seeking businesses with pros sourced from LinkedIn for quickie consultations, had some announcements at TechCrunch Disrupt. It's launching in public beta, with a new private audio chat function.  Plus, the company has released some stats from its private beta and would like you to know that 25 percent of their "micro-consultants" are in director or exec-level positions, and 30.5 percent of them are currently making at least $110,000/year. Spiffy!

Look Out My Window Oh hey, look what Github made: A brand new native Github for Windows application. It'll run on Windows XP, Vista and 7, as well as, when it eventually comes out, Windows 8. Check it out.

Today, In Portlandia Austin has SXSW. Why shouldn't have Portland have XOXO? Some folks have turned to Kickstarter (but of course) to raise money to throw the city an arts and technology festival celebrating "disruptive creativity."

A Cool Mil Airbnb has just upgraded its "Host Guarantee," which previously promised to cover up to $50,000 in damages. The startup now says it will now cover up to $1 million worth of havoc wreaked. Their word is even backed by Lloyd's of London, a name that has long screamed, "we are hundreds of years old and by God we mean business."

Trippy We can't not mention this: Pitchfork is developing something called Soundplay with Intel, as what looks to be a promotion for the Intel Ultrabook. The site has commissioned five "immersive, music-based online games," based on tracks from Pitchfork-approved musicians like M83, Cut Copy, and Matthew Dear. Here's the first one, Street Song.

STOP BY, SAY HI Internet Week has the city's tech community feeling even more welcoming than usual, and so many names you'll recognize are participating in WalkaboutNYC, this Friday from 12 to 6pm. Tumblr, Gilt Groupe, Spotify, 10Gen, Facebook, CodeAcademy, and pretty much everyone else you can think of will be opening their New York offices to the public. Most are offering tours at particular times, but a few--Sonar, Sidetour, Warby Parker--are having traditional open houses. TALK TO ME Engag.io is evolving: Originally something of a social media inbox, it's now a "social conversations network." How's that? The addition of a new discovery dashboard, allowing users to see and engage with friends' conversations all over the social web. MAKING MOVES Just last week social advertising platform Adaptly launched its latest solution, with the code-name-style moniker of Evergreen. The offering converts content generated for brand pages into paid advertising, and Kraft Foods has already signed on. The company also announced a $10.5 million Series B led by Valhalla Partners, which, among other things, will help finance that snazzy new product.

CROWDFUNDING FUN Lucky Ant is on the move again. The nabe-based crowdfunding platform has expanded to the East Village, where the non-profit, arts-supporting FAB Café needs cash to replace its decrepit old floors, and the West Village, where farm-to-table Scandinavian restaurant Smörgås Chef wants the scratch to raise more chickens. They've also racked up another success story, having helped 65-year-old The Living Theater come up with $24,000 to stay in its Clinton Street home.

EXPO EXCITEMENT Announced last week, NY Business Expo is making sure the city's startup scene feels included. The Expo has four major components: a show floor, Startup Central, small business classrooms, and an after-hours networking event. Startup Central will feature mentors ready to consult one-on-one with entrepreneurs. Also, for the bootstrappers, both Startup Central and the show floor are free to attend.
