Hawaii Zuck-O Look who ditched the hoodie (but kept the Adidas sandals). Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently spotted indulging in a little Hawaiin R&R with wifey Priscilla Chan. US Weekly reports the pair “looked excited to be spending quality time together,” which makes sense since it's pretty easy to be happy when you’ve escaped the maw of Silicon Valley. The Zucks also “chowed down” on something called “beachside burgers” at a “picnic table.” Stars: they're just like us (but rich).

Instaparty Former Tumblr engineer and prolific blogginghead Marco Arment officially sold his company, read-it-later app Instapaper, to NYC-based Betaworks yesterday. Though he will stay on indefinitely as an advisor, Mr. Arment appeared to be celebrating the occasion by tweeting uncharacteristically adorable things about his followers:

Mr. Arment, as it turns out, appeared to be rightfully celebrating his Betaworks deal with a delicious cold beverage. "I can’t feel my face much anymore," he admitted. "I’ve had one beer. Granted, it’s about 20% ABV. It’s a hell of a beer." Lightweight!

So maj It's become somewhat of a celebrity rite of passage to participate in the ever-meta act of snapping a photo of yourself with Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom, then plastering it onto--that's right--your Instagram profile. Cult of Steve Erin Caton, a former project manager at Apple, took to Medium today to lament the growing number of douchey startup CEOs, who--in their attempt to emulate Steve Jobs--end up growing ever-douchier and unwilling to listen to peer feedback. To illustrate her story, she shares two anecdotes of her experience with Mr. Jobs: one, in which he cut in front of her in line at the Apple cafeteria (rude!), and another in which he blamed the Mobile Me team for a shoddy launch.

She writes:

Once it was up, we (at least a hundred of us) got called into a meeting with Steve Jobs. We all walked over to the building like we were headed to the guillotine. He stood in front of us and yelled at us, told us that we should be mad at each other, said we could have done a staggered launch and complained that we didn’t even try to do all the things that we (those on the ground floor of production that actuallymake the fucking products of the world) had been begging to do. It was the world’s best de-motivational speech.

Wows all the way down Storied VC Marc Andreessen took a break from annotating hip hop lyrics this week to gush about the potential transformative nature of Google Glass at the she++ Conference, when he jokingly claimed to already be beta testing Google Contact Lenses. Mr. Andreessen also took time to preach on the life-changing wonders of Google Glass, with a twinge of Valley girl thrown in. “You put it on and you’re like ‘Oh my God, I have the entire internet in my vision. Where have you been all my life?’” Andreessen said.

Andreessen and his firm are known for showing Glass some lovin', having already invested heavily in startups focused on building apps for Google Glass. But Mr. Andreessen is probably so gung-ho about Glass because he's hoping they'll help him finally solve the mystery of Silicon Valley Cougar Night at the Rosewood Hotel.

Get Dorsey Man of few emotions Jack Dorsey showed a flicker of excitement this week. No, he didn’t discover a new train yard to stare at--rather, he’s mildly excited about the new Daft Punk album. He attached a picture of the Get Lucky song art to prove to us that he knows how to take a screenshot or something. Maybe this was all ploy to subtweet us for not giving a shit about Twitter #Music.

When does Snoop get his award for a lifetime of medical marijuana research?

Here's the thing about philanthropy: There's always plenty of people more than happy to accept a generous cash donation. Hence, Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner's Breakthrough Prize, which he launched back in August as his very own version of the Nobel Prize for Physics, is branching out. The prize will no longer go to just physicists doomed to toil in obscurity, as Mr. Milner has enlisted several Silicon Valley heavyweights to contribute to a new Life Sciences franchise.

Art Levinson (former Genentech CEO, Apple chairman) has signed on as chairman, while Mr. Milner, Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki (of 23andMe and also wife to Mr. Brin), Mark Zuckerberg, and Priscilla Chan are all founding sponsors, as well. (Though it's not clear who coughed up how much.) They plan to dole out five $3 million prizes annually going forward, with alums selecting the honorees. 

This year's winners were selected for things like "linkage mapping of Mendelian disease in humans using DNA polymorphis" and "describing the role of Wnt signaling in tissue stem cells and cancer" and "cancer genes and targeted therapy." You know, just the kinds of projects that make even billionaire startup founders feel like maybe they aren't God's gift, after all.

“These scientists should be household names and heros in society,” said Ms. Wojcicki in a statement. Her husband added: "Curing a disease should be worth more than a touchdown.” We're guessing Sergey is not a 49ers bandwagon fan, in that case?

Said Zuck:

“Priscilla and I are honored to be part of this,” said Mark Zuckerberg. “We believe the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences has the potential to provide a platform for other models of philanthropy, so people everywhere have an opportunity at a better future.”

Always with the platforms! We do hope, however, that this is the result of long-term planning and not because Zuck forgot Valentine's Day.

We cannot wait for Peter Thiel to participate in the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for Literature, heavily skewed toward authors influenced by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien.

(Updated: 2:50 p.m.) The boy billionaires sponsoring this prize put on a press conference this afternoon, in order to answer a few questions about their initiative meant to reward "excellence in research aimed at curing intractable diseases and extending human life." Guess they figure we already have some extra time to kill in our soon-to-be-extended lifespans, because Misters Zuckerberg and Milner in particular were an hour late showing up, then said very little that hadn't already appeared in the press release.

Don't they get that all we want to know is where this puts us on the countdown to the Singularity?

"People doing this amazing work should get more recognition--not just for themselves, but for all of society," said Mr. Zuckerberg when he finally arrived. "This isn't a prize where we're trying to have an impact this year." Gotta do something to check The Social Network Effect, if only for the sake of karma.

Mr. Brin did not speak, but rather sat in the audience watching his wife (who sounded great, actually), Google Glass perched on his nose.

Some have suggested that philanthropy came back in 2012, at least in New York, where local institutions received eight and even nine-figure donations this year. Well, New Yorkers aren't the only ones feeling generous.

According to a post on his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg is donating 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a gift worth about $500 million at current stock valuations: 

Today, in order to lay the foundation for new projects, we've made a contribution of 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. Together, we will look for areas in education and health to focus on next. I'm hopeful we'll be able to have as positive an impact in our next set of projects.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation provides "visionary community leadership by identifying emerging challenges in our region," according to the "About Us" section of its website. That's relatively vague, and there's been no indication of what specific goals Mr. Zuckerberg hopes to achieve with his gift, unless it's to remind New York's philanthropists they're not the only ones with the balls to give big.

This is neither here nor there but strange enough to note: a screengrab from a Chinese documentary, Chinese Police, which features at exactly 30 seconds in a photobomb from no less than Facebook C.E.O. Mark Zuckerberg. Mr. Zuckerberg, who reportedly visited Shanghai at the end of March, is shown walking with Ms. Chan behind a pair of grim-faced Chinese cops, looking oddly amused if not downright tickled by the scene in front of him.

The site that originally reported the photobomb (docu-bomb?) translated the subtitle on-screen during Mr. Zuckerberg's appearance as "Many problems impelled the Chinese police to find way (sic) to increase efficiency."

More fun still are the comments on Chinasmack.com, which prove the eternally devolving nature of Internet commenters rarely changes, regardless of language or nationality:

• "The head of an illegal foreign website, and they even planted an advertistement for him!"
• "The highest net worth background actor ever."
• "This is the prelude to Facebook entering China."
• "This is clearly American imperialists deliberately interfering in our internal affairs."

If the last quote is true Mr. Zuckerberg may be informing his handlers at the C.I.A. at this very moment that Operation Docu-bomb (Photobomb?) is--so far--a bigger success than Facebook's IPO.

Priscilla Chan, a graduate of Harvard University and UCSF Medical School, married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in an intimate ceremony at the couple's Palo Alto, CA home on Saturday, May 19th.

Ms. Chan, 27, looked radiant in an ethereal Claire Pettibone gown with a lace-detailed neckline. Mr. Zuckerberg, 28, eschewed his trademark hooded sweatshirt for a clean dark blue suit.

It has been a whirlwind week for the couple, who have shared a life since their collegiate days at Harvard University, where Ms. Chan studied biology and Mr. Zuckerberg computer science. Ms. Chan graduated from UCSF Medical school with a doctoral degree in medicine at the beginning of last week; Mr. Zuckerberg took his wildly popular website, Facebook, public on Friday, and is estimated to have made billions of dollars from the deal.

Ms. Chan grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts before attending Harvard in 2003. Prior to medical school, she taught at the Harker School in San Jose.

Mr. Zuckerberg hails from Dobbs Ferry, New York, and founded social networking site Facebook while a student at Harvard. One day before the couple's nuptials, he ushered in the biggest tech IPO in history.

Saturday's ceremony was a surprise to the 100 or so guests who had gathered in Palo Alto, believing they were there to celebrate Ms. Chan's medical school graduation. Guests munched on sushi from the couple's favorite Palo Alto Japanese restaurant.

They have been together for nine years.

Evidently it took Facebook's much-ballyhooed IPO for Mark Zuckerberg's long-time girlfriend Priscilla Chan to finally decide Mr. Zuckerberg might make something of himself, after all. The pair were married Saturday, according to a photo post and status change noted on Mr. Zuckerberg's Facebook timeline.

The marriage comes after what was obviously a pretty big week for Mr. Zuckerberg and for Ms. Chan, who received her medical degree from U.C. San Francisco last Monday, which was also Mr. Zuckerberg's 28th birthday.

The nuptials also come a mere 9 years after the pair met and 6 months after Ms. Chan finally listed Mr. Zuckerberg as her "partner" on her Facebook profile.

We hope the crazy kids aren't rushing anything and can benefit from lots of $100 bills tucked in suit coat pockets by kindly, drunken uncles.
