Mark Zuckerberg Is Dropping $1.6M to Renovate His San Francisco Mansion

Yeah we'd look happy, too. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

The best part of buying a new house, obviously, is ripping out the grotty old cabinets and remaking the den to suit your personal preferences. Or at least that’s the case if you happened to have founded Facebook and therefore have an enormous stockpile of cash.

While the couple won’t confirm it, reports say that Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, recently purchased a second home in the vicinity of San Francisco’s Mission District, near Dolores Park. Perhaps so Beast can herd hipsters and startup bros instead of livestock? Read More

Rumor Roundup: Zuckerbergs in Budapest, Naveen’s API and at Least One Tumblr Engineer Is Super Stoked to Now Work for Yahoo

Yahoo! for Yahoos! We’ve found a leading candidate for the single person happiest to hear that Yahoo was acquiring Tumblr. No, we’re not talking about CEO David Karp.

Meet Tumblr engineer Jeremy Johnstone. He used to work for Yahoo, and, apparently, the company retains a place of pride in his heart. In fact, he still wears Yahoo gear so constantly that one of his colleagues (the parent of Tommy Pom, no less) has created an entire Tumblr–”Jeremy’s Yahoo Wardrobe”–to chronicle his displays of loyalty.

For example, here is the bright purple car covered in Yahoo decals that he drove in 2007. Here is his Halloween costume from 2006, when he dressed up as the Yahoo logo. And then there are his many company t-shirts. Love is a beautiful thing, you guys. Read More

Rumor Roundup: Zuck’s in Hawaii, While Kevin Systrom Looks So Maj Next to Rachel Zoe

(Photo: Instagram)

Hawaii Zuck-O Look who ditched the hoodie (but kept the Adidas sandals). Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was recently spotted indulging in a little Hawaiin R&R with wifey Priscilla Chan. US Weekly reports the pair “looked excited to be spending quality time together,” which makes sense since it’s pretty easy to be happy when you’ve escaped the maw of Silicon Valley. The Zucks also “chowed down” on something called “beachside burgers” at a “picnic table.” Stars: they’re just like us (but rich). Read More

Mark Zuckerberg and Sergey Brin Cut Big Checks to Reward ‘Extending Human Life’

You can't sit with us.

Here’s the thing about philanthropy: There’s always plenty of people more than happy to accept a generous cash donation. Hence, Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner’s Breakthrough Prize, which he launched back in August as his very own version of the Nobel Prize for Physics, is branching out. The prize will no longer go to just physicists doomed to toil in obscurity, as Mr. Milner has enlisted several Silicon Valley heavyweights to contribute to a new Life Sciences franchise.

Art Levinson (former Genentech CEO, Apple chairman) has signed on as chairman, while Mr. Milner, Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki (of 23andMe and also wife to Mr. Brin), Mark Zuckerberg, and Priscilla Chan are all founding sponsors, as well. (Though it’s not clear who coughed up how much.) They plan to dole out five $3 million prizes annually going forward, with alums selecting the honorees.  Read More

Booting Up: Mark Zuckerberg At Top of List for Giving it Away

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - February 19, 2012

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were at the top of the list of the biggest U.S. philanthropists for the second consecutive year. The couple donated $500 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in December, making them the country’s second largest donors, behind Warren Buffett, who gave away $3.1 billion last year. Twitter and American Express announced a plan to turn the microblogging service into an ecommerce platform: Details are vague, but it sounds like the partnership will allow users to link their Amex to their Twitter feeds, than make a purchase by posting a message. What will you buy with your subtweets? [WSJ]

We guess Michelle Obama won’t be buying a Surface Pro anytime soon. Apple CEO Tim Cook will be a guest of the FLOTUS during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address this evening. Last year, Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs joined Ms. Obama for the State of the Union. [Mercury News]

The residential real estate website Trulia crunched some numbers ahead of Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for a man, try Las Vegas, Honolulu, Palm Bay, Florida, San Jose or Gary, Indiana; if you want the highest percentages of women living alone, try Bethesda, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Boston, New York or Raleigh, North Carolina. What do you get a tech billionaire for his birthday? Books, apparently. But of the electronic or dead tree variety? [Business Insider]

It’s Been a Good Year for Mark Zuckerberg, and He’s Closing It Out With a $500 Million Donation

(Cyan Banister.)

Some have suggested that philanthropy came back in 2012, at least in New York, where local institutions received eight and even nine-figure donations this year. Well, New Yorkers aren’t the only ones feeling generous.

According to a post on his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg is donating 18 million Facebook shares to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a gift worth about $500 million at current stock valuations:  Read More

The Strange Case of the Mark Zuckerberg-Priscilla Chan Chinese Cop Documentary Photobomb

Don't turn around officers, the ultimate capitalist is laughing at you!

This is neither here nor there but strange enough to note: a screengrab from a Chinese documentary, Chinese Police, which features at exactly 30 seconds in a photobomb from no less than Facebook C.E.O. Mark Zuckerberg. Mr. Zuckerberg, who reportedly visited Shanghai at the end of March, is shown walking with Ms. Chan behind a pair of grim-faced Chinese cops, looking oddly amused if not downright tickled by the scene in front of him.

The site that originally reported the photobomb (docu-bomb?) translated the subtitle on-screen during Mr. Zuckerberg’s appearance as “Many problems impelled the Chinese police to find way (sic) to increase efficiency.” Read More

Priscilla Chan, a graduate of Harvard University and UCSF Medical School, married Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in an intimate ceremony at the couple’s Palo Alto, CA home on Saturday, May 19th.
