still alive but barely breathing
YouTube Killed the Video Star
We’d tell you don’t look now, but you probably weren’t anyway: LivingSocial’s website and mobile apps haven’t been working for nearly a full day. The daily deals site that isn’t called Groupon lost all ability to function as a “scheduled maintenance” outage has reportedly gone awry.
YouTube appears to be down for some users, according to anecdotal data and the pretty reliable Downrightnow.com.
“It blows,” a local woman said of the outage via Gchat.
When the cable goes out, normal people complain about it on Twitter. In Connecticut, people call 911.
That’s what happened last night in southern Connecticut when affected Optimum Cable subscribers decided that missing an episode of Breaking Bad or Eat Drink Love was akin to suffering a major heart attack. Service was down for about two hours during primetime because of a power outage in Norwalk.
Lying Bitches 500 Startups founder Dave McClure, known for his rather dirty mouth, made a big slip-up at the Nebraska-based thinkfluencer festival Big Omaha today. According to Valleywag, Mr. McClure was giving a talk at the conference when he asked someone how good her iPhone battery life was. When she responded with a presumably positive answer, Mr. McClure called her a “lying bitch.” On stage. In front of tons of people.
Between 8:20 a.m. and 9 a.m., Twitter completely crashed, leaving many users devastated and distraught. We desperately cast about for answers in the bittersweet shelter of other social networks, begging our Facebook friends and our Tumblr followers for an answer to the long-lasting outage. An error page brought no relief: “Whole server runtime (in this case Ruby engine) is down and web server send raw code to client browsers,” a helpful commenter attempted to clarify, but we still had no idea what % = reason actually meant. It was a rough 40 minutes.
The service came back up a few hours ago, but Twitter hadn’t explained itself until now. So what happened? Was it a hacker attack? Olympic overload?
