Back in August, we told you about Offbeatr, which aims to be the Kickstarter for porn. Four months in, the site boasts five successful projects, which have raised a total of $60,934. And as the blog Flayrah recently noticed, all of them are furry-themed.

Furries, for those of you who've never traversed the deep Internets, are into anthropomorphized depictions of animals. They also like to dress up as animals and, like most fandoms, gather IRL at conventions. The whole deal often has a sexual overtone, which is where Offbeatr comes in.

Flayrah (tagline: "furry food for thought") points out that it's furries that are getting traction on the kinky crowdfunding site. The most successful project, for example, is a fantasy sex game called "Furoticon Online." The explanation:

Furoticon Online will allow you to compete in climactic matches of up to 8 players from all around the world! Bring your friends and your mates along to see who is the champion of the bedroom!

The campaign page is hella NSFW, unless you work at a place where graphically erotic images of anthropomorphic animals are a-okay. It's raised $39,841 from 295 supporters, drawing on an existing fanbase. Furoticon is already a popular card game, and the Offbeatr campaign was simply to raise the case for video game development.

Offbeatr founder Ben Tao told Flayrah that not only was the success of the furry projects not by design, but he also admitted that before they took off, he wasn't even aware of the community's existence. But he's perfectly happy to have them!

Our goal was to build a platform that allowed creative people to explore sexuality and in our minds the furry projects do exactly that. At for us the enjoyment comes out from helping out where prior to us launching there were no legitimate or easy ways to raise funding for adult projects.

So when do we get the TED Talk?

Everyone enjoys getting a special unexpected treat every so often. For some it's just a small red velvet cupcake after work, but for others it's getting your entire college tuition taken care of by a stranger. Luckily, there is now myTreat, a location-based iPhone app that lets people consensually take advantage of one another for smaller ticket items.

The app launches today and was created by Ben Tao and Eric Lai, the team behind Offbeatr, the "Kickstarter for porn." Although there is a risque element to this new app, the creators stress that this is a new project that doesn't involve any adult content.

myTreat is easy to use. Treaters post what they want to offer--like a cup of coffee, for example--and the qualities they're looking for in a treatee. Those looking to get treated then express interest in available treats by messaging the treaters.

The site obviously runs the risk of enabling the wrong kind of quid pro quo relationships. With that kind of power dynamic, it's almost an inevitability. But sugar daddy talk aside, the app can also be used for meeting new people in a strange city ("I'll buy you lunch if you show me around"), as well as potential business partners ("I'll treat you to coffee if you can help me solve this bug"). Nonetheless, brace for a backlash if myTreat gets the same kind of attention as Seeking Arrangement.

When we first heard about Offbeatr (NSFW) back in February, the Kickstarter for porn prompted us to ask ourselves: What other fast-growth startups could benefit from a porn-y clone? Quite a few already had one, as the commenters noted.

Well today, Offbeatr, the delightfully open-minded brainchild of cofounders Ben Tao and Eric Lai, finally launched, billing itself as non-equity based platform to fund "sex and adult related creative projects." 

Judging by the early offerings, that means anything from a cultural exchange program to introduce popular porn Japanese stars to American audiences--the donor rewards are remarkably more interactive--to the more domestic Mormonboyz.com, a gay porn site that will feature "hot young missionaries and their higher ranking priesthood leaders." That staff-picked project is raising funds to produce a documentary called "Got Mormon Milk?" for the HUMP! amateur porn festival this fall.

Nor is the site entirely male-oriented. Another project seeks to finance a redesign for Cherry.tv, an online network of "juicy talk for women" to help them get comfortable with their inner kink. There's also the minority-and-female-owned Double D Erotica.

Projects can raise money the Kickstarter route, offering rewards to donors only if they meet their funding goal, or by selling digital wares like movies, ebooks and photos.

Offbeatr is the product of Extra Lunch Money, a Los Angeles-based startup that sold amateur porn. Difficulty finding funding for their company--and three rejections from Y Combinator in a row--helped them recognize the difficulty in raising capital to back anything XXX-rated.

Crowdfunding may be a crowded market, but Offbeatr stands alone, like that cordoned-off aisle in your neighborhood video store. There's no chance the practically mainstream Kickstarter or the up-and-coming Indiegogo are going to open up their door to the untoward.

To add some oversight to that inclusiveness, all projects have to subject themselves to a public voting period before they can accept funds. Democracy, ladies and gentlepervs.

There are tons of places where you can complete small online tasks for cash--Fiverr, for example, where you can post tasks you're willing to complete for $5, or Amazon Mechanical Turk, where you can get paid a few pennies for taking online surveys, among other mini jobs.

But some people aren't looking to earn money. Some people are looking to earn porn.

For those enterprising individuals, Extra Lunch Money (NSFW) exists.

Extra Lunch Money has partnered with a third party crowdsourcing platform (though they specifically asked not to be named). Users can complete microtasks--like, ironically, flagging images that are inappropriate or contain adult content--and in turn earn credits that they can redeem for porn on Extra Lunch Money, a website for homemade XXX media.

"Think Etsy for homemade adult content," clarified Ben Tao, cofounder of Extra Lunch Money, of the site's user-submitted model.

Back in February, we told you about Offbeatr, a Kickstarter for porn--but we also called for more pornified startups. So thank you, Mr. Tao, for answering our plea.

"By motivating users with ‘porn’ they contribute work that improves search results, helps companies create better products, and even prevents unwanted penis photos from showing up in people’s news feeds," said Mr. Tao in a press release.

Sounds like a win-win to us.
