Mad for Maps
At this point, most people are pretty much devoted to their current map app, and odds are that’s probably Google’s. But that’s apparently not enough to dissuade the guys at New York-based Citymaps, which just released a revamped version of its product in iOS form, in an attempt to make maps more social.
“We’re trying to rethink maps and trying to think about what maps are going to be in the future,” CEO Elliot Cohen explained to Betabeat.
New York startup CityMaps thinks Google Maps needs a makeover, or at least some lessons on how to be social. The tool incorporates data behind several popular companies like Twitter, Foursquare and Groupon, and mashes them up into one easily-readable guide to your city. Today, TechCrunch reported that CityMaps closed a $2.5 million Series A round earlier this year, backed by investors Dave Leyrer and 360i.com president Dave Levin.
