Uptime monitoring company Pingdom crunched the numbers behind the U.S. demographics of some of the internet's most devoted communities in 2012, and unearthed some pretty interesting stats. Though the majority of the web's infrastructure was built by people who have never played Pokemon or seen an episode of Boy Meets World, social media is largely touted as a young person's game. But according to Pingdom, the majority of social networks are actually populated primarily by users over 35.

In its study, Pingdom found:

55 percent of Twitter users are 35 or older.

63 percent of Pinterest users are 35 or older.

65 percent of Facebook users are 35 or older.

79 percent of LinkedIn users are 35 or older.

Though Facebook has slowly tipped over into the Farmville set, we were surprised to see just how few young people actually use it, considering its sophomoric origins. Meanwhile, sites like Github, Hacker News and Reddit all boast a user majority of under 35, with 58 percent, 60 percent and 69 percent, respectively.

DeviantART, which is apparently still around, has the highest amount of young users, because studies show that people grow out of drawing gothic-inspired self portraits by the time they lose their virginity.
