Move over, weird Google Glass earbud. There’s a new kind of wearable tech in town, and it’s marginally cooler-looking.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America and eBay have teamed up to color with magic markers on a bunch of USB cords, then wrap them around people’s wrists, PSFK reports. See, they are iPhone chargers that don’t come with iPhones or wall plugs.
An unusual sight greeted us when we walked into General Assembly on Saturday: a large chalk mural of Coco Chanel. ”Success is often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable,” read a quote from the designer who’d probably have more right to call herself a “disruptor” than most of the yahoos out in Silicon Valley.
“For me, the most exciting [development] is 3D printing, in terms of–if you can imagine getting custom measurements and printing your own garment, or your own shoe, or designer licensing a shape then you can download and print it,” speculated designer Rebecca Minkoff before she breezed out the door to keep her busy Fashion Week schedule.
Silicon Alley is awfully fond of putting “proximity to other industries” in its plus column. As the line goes: We’re down the street from the top media, financial, and fashion companies in the world! Despite being neighbors, however, fashion and tech have had some trouble understanding each other–hence the growing number of fashion startups that have hung up their stilettos for good.
Into all that drama jumped Decoded Fashion with an exceedingly practical idea: a fashion hackathon where industry insiders tell techies what’s actually lacking in the market. In other words, rather than the umpteenth street style photo-sharing apps, how about the next Fashion GPS, a digital tracker for samples and look books used by designers like Lanvin, Dior and many, many more.
