Woodside, California is a quaint, wealthy suburb in San Mateo County, situated about 20 minutes from the tech hub of Palo Alto. Because of its close proximity to big tech companies like Google and Facebook, many wealthy entrepreneurs (including Larry Ellison!) call Woodside home. And now, because of its plethora of eligible rich men, online dating startup SugarDaddie.com, which unites "wealthy, desirable and attractive people," has offered the town $11.65 million to officially change its name to SugarDaddie.com, USA.

It's not the worst idea we've ever heard.

SugarDaddie, which has been around since 2003, wants to create the world's first dating site-sponsored city. Unfortunately, it's having some trouble finding a taker. Sugar Land, Texas already turned down its $5 million offer, and $11.65 million is probably chump change to the tech billionaires settled in Woodside. ($11.65 million is what Captain Larry E. calls "loose change.")

If Woodside accepted SugarDaddie's proposal, they would also have to agree to the following terms, according to NBC.com:

- All official government correspondence, selected institutions and street signs changed to reflect the new name. This includes renaming the Town Hall, town council, public library, annual art fair and all city websites.

-- Local government officials must present Steven Pasternack, CEO of SugarDaddie.com, with a key to the town in a formal ceremony.

-- And last but certainly not least, a statue near Town Hall must be built of Hugh Hefner or another public figure who best represents the sugar-daddy lifestyle.

Has SugarDaddie tried presenting this offer to a town in Florida? Seems like they'd probably be up for it.

However broke the state of California may be, it's also sitting on a treasure trove of unclaimed property that's valued at over $6 billion. Holders like "corporations, business associations, financial institutions, and insurance companies" are required to report any unclaimed property annually to the state comptroller's office. That means if you've forgotten about bank account contents or uncashed money orders, they're sitting around with the comptroller.

Houston Rockets quantitative analyst Christopher Long searched the database for some bold-faced names and came up with some pretty amusing results. For one, Google cofounder Sergey Brin is apparently owed paychecks from Stanford University worth over $1,000. (No word on whether Rockets player and Harvard grad Jeremy Lin helped sift through the bold-faced names.)

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak has a $269 check waiting for him from the California Automobile Association, and the state of Pennsylvania appears to owe Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk $408.

The most interesting, however, is that according to the comptroller, PayPal owes Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg $308.62. The address listed on the form is for 1743 Westbrook Ave. in Los Altos, CA, the house Zuck and Co. rented [PDF] while building Facebook. As a struggling entrepreneur in 2004-2005, he probably could've used that money.

Misters Zuck, Brin, Woz and Musk can fill out a Claim Affirmation Form to collect their money, though we're guessing it's chump change to the cadre of millionnaires at this point.

What's a thousand-pound steel monster controlled entirely by a computer, no human required? It's a driverless car! And it's one step closer to legally operating on public roads. The Singularity is nigh, friends.

According to Ars Technica, the California State Senate officially passed SB 1289, which--following the creation of standards and performance requirements by the DMV--would allow robot cars to hit the open road.

California legislators have sent a bill to the governor’s desk that could push forward the development of autonomous cars in the Golden State. The new bill requires the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles to adopt new regulations, including safety standards and “performance requirements” for new autonomous vehicles. Once those new rules are put in place, the bill “would permit autonomous vehicles to be operated or tested on the public roads in this state.”

We spent years driving up and down that stretch of freeway between Palo Alto and San Francisco, so we understand California's eagerness to pass this bill. Driverless cars can't possibly be any more dangerous than the drivers sitting in traffic on the 101 right now.
