There are a lot of things that a person has to grapple with in life. Big, universal questions about self, love and identity. And, probably most poignant of all struggles: the impulse to throw away a stupid bobblehead that was a present from Snoop Dogg.
With the opening of the brick and mortar Birchbox store earlier this summer, the general consensus has been either excitement or confusion around the subscription box hype. For those not in the know, Birchbox is a subscription box makeup service: a box full of the hottest makeup samples are sent to subscribers via mail. Like a magazine, but with stuff.
You frequently see brick-and-mortar businesses start selling their wares on the interwebs, but it’s less common to see it work the other way around.
But that’s the case for Birchbox, the New York-based subscription service that sends customers monthly boxes of beauty and lifestyle products. The company — which scored $60 million in funding back in April — announced yesterday the opening of its first physical store in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood, at 433 West Broadway.
Birchbox announced this morning that it’s just closed a $60 million Series B led by Viking Global Investors, along with existing investors First Round Capital, Accel Partners, Aspect Partners, Glynn Capital, Comcast Ventures, Sam Lessin, Consigliere Brand Capital, Slow Ventures, Red Swan Ventures and TriplePoint Venture Growth BDC Corp.
Birchbox Hits the Red Carpet
Never ones to miss out on a culturally relevant partnership, Birchbox announced today that it’s teaming up with Us Weekly in honor of Oscar season. Launching in February, the Oscars-themed Birchbox will feature items hand-picked by Us Weekly Beauty Director Gwen Flamberg and inspired by the most popular looks on this year’s red carpets. Following the awards show, on March 2, Birchbox will be offering Oscars fanatics even more red carpet-inspired goodies in its online “Get the Look” shop. Will J. Law be for sale?
Cyber Monday out of the box That glorious, pajama shopping-enabled holiday, Cyber Monday, is less than a week away now. And Birchbox is rolling out several ways to take advantage of their deals for the occasion. First up, they launched their shopping app last week so you don’t even need to support the weight of a laptop while buying presents from your couch. Next, Birchbox is generous enough to give you a Rebecca Taylor-designed makeup pouch when you spend at least $55 on other stuff. So, not every present has to be for someone else.
