When Marissa Mayer posed upside-down on a lounge chair in a form-fitting dress for Vogue last month like the boss she is, quite a few digital bricks were shat. But it appears the Yahoo CEO didn’t let the criticism get to her–although she admitted to not having read any of the 3,000 words that accompanied the photo.
At yesterday’s IAB Mixx conference, part of New York’s Advertising Week, Charlie Rose referenced “that Vogue cover,” at which point the always-modest CEO interrupted with, “It wasn’t the cover!” CNN Money reports.
“It was a nice photo,” she said. She told Mr. Rose that Vogue staffers offered her a choice between a blue dress and a black dress and she selected the former because she’s anti-black clothing, as evidenced by her puzzling selection of a bright-orange dress at the punk-themed (a.k.a. black-leather fest) Met Gala this year.
At the Vogue shoot, she chilled upright on the chaise at first, but then the photog told her “he wouldn’t be able to use the prim ‘First Lady-like’ shots,” CNN Money reports.
“He said, ‘This is not going to work at all,'” Ms. Mayer’s quoted as saying. “‘Would you try kind of going upside down?’ I said, ‘Will it look good?’ and he told me not to worry.”
And worry she shouldn’t; the shot was amazing, despite critics’ pearl-clutching reactions. As mentioned above, though, Ms. Mayer couldn’t be arsed to read the mag’s actual profile on her, heeding the words of Madeleine Albright, who once said “that press, good or bad, it influences you and it changes you,” Mayer said.
Ugh, but if she doesn’t read press about her, how will she know to feel guilty about every single decision she makes?
