Babblr–the Chrome extension that enables instant chat on the Tumblr Dashboard–is giving it another go, starting June 3. Earlier this month, the company launched its chat product, allowing users to IM with friends and rando followers alike. You know, so you can connect with everyone who loves your sexually charged Megatron fanfics.
Unfortunately, the demand– to the tune of 250,000 subscribers and 30,000 downloads within three hours of launch–completely fried Babblr’s servers, inspiring a DefCon 2 freakout from Tumblr’s hysteria-prone community. Users are still babbling about whether Babblr was actually a virus, while tech-savvy users post theatrically exasperated rebuttals. For instance:
People seem to be forgetting when they talk about babblr, that it was an overly ambitious project by 3 guys. 3 guys. Also, it’s still pretty much in beta and there are thousands of people signing up for it. There’s bound to be a few kinks. Even pottermore shut down due to strain on the servers. And think of how many people they had working for them.
Even Pottermore has server troubles, you guys.
Now Babblr is relaunching, having partnered with Realtime.co and promising they’ll have plenty of servers this time. Of course, the rollout will be a little better managed–donors are getting first crack on June 3, with a wider release “soon to follow.” So get ready to do your worst, tweens!
