Twitter has suspended one of the Anonymous’s most followed accounts, @YourAnonNews, which boasted almost 800,000 followers prior to its suspension. Some members of the hacktivist collective believe that the account was suspended for its work in helping to organize an operation meant to keep the Westboro Baptist Church from protesting at the funerals of Sandy Hook victims. As Twitter does not comment on the status of individual accounts, Betabeat cannot confirm why the account was suspended.
“Twitter has suspended @youranonnews and limited my accounts ability to send tweets during protest,” tweeted KY Anonymous from a backup account, adding “twitter blacking out anon accounts during protest.” KY Anonymous says he was muted from tweeting, but it is unclear if any other Anonymous accounts or hashtags have been limited or suspended. KY Anonymous helped to launch the initial operation against Westboro that took down 19 of the church’s domains and resulted in the suspension of @DearShirley after the infamous 15-year-old hacker Cosmo the God wrested control of it.
Google cache captured @YourAnonNews’ tweets as recently as one hour ago. The most recent tweets appear to be attempts to organize the counter protest. “dickenson park off elm in newtown is
#occupynewtown HQ meet by tennis courts, await more anons, then move to 2 School Street Woodbury, CT 06798 woodbury funeral home at noon to form human wall, WBC to show between 1-3,” read two recent tweets.
It’s possible that @YourAnonNews may have been suspended related to “Privacy” rule in Twitter’s Terms of Service, which states, “You may not publish or post other people’s private and confidential information, such as credit card numbers, street address or Social Security/National Identity numbers, without their express authorization and permission.” Anonymous has been releasing personal information about Westboro Baptist Church members throughout the week.
@YourAnonNews had already established a backup account in case of suspension. “We have emailed Twitter Support asking for why @YourAnonNews has been suspended,” it tweeted. “Remember, YAN isn’t Anonymous… just a part. We move on.”
Update 12:57 p.m. @YourAnonNews is back up and running… for now, at least. The account posted a screenshot of a letter from Twitter that says it was suspended for posting “an individual’s private information.” It appears the account may have lost all of its followers in the process, but is quickly gaining them back.
