Marissa Mayer, the surprising new CEO of Yahoo, announced another surprise late tonight: She is pregnant with her first child, and due to give birth in early October. Ms. Mayer and her husband, San Francisco lawyer Zack Bogue, are expecting a boy. The 37-year-old former Googler and first-time CEO comes across as prepared to juggle her new company with her new family life, telling FORTUNE “My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I’ll work throughout it.” The Yahoo board was informed of Ms. Mayer’s pregnancy last month before finalizing her as the candidate.
In a recent talk at the 92nd St Y, Ms. Mayer addressed the subjects of women in technology and the threat of burning out while working for startups. “I don’t really believe in burnout,” she stated, elaborating that burnout was more a product of resentment than actual exhaustion. “Know yourself well enough to know what you’re giving up,” she advised. For those people wondering if Ms. Mayer will be able to keep those opinions in light of her new situation, we would like to point out that she made those statements in late March, two months after she had learned of her pregnancy.
