2G isn't cool. You know what's cool? Not having to rely 2G . . . in 2012. We imagine it's that kind of realization--coupled with a steady stream of tweets like these (once AT&T users can get a signal, that is)--that has prompted the company to improve bandwidth in New York City. AllThingsD reports that AT&T is "shifting some of its bandwidth away from older networks and toward its newer 3G and 4G networks."

It's part of a larger campaign to improve service in problem cities like New York and San Francisco, including adding cell towers, which requires approval, as well as developing Wifi "hot zones," that can help absorb some of the traffic. According to ATD, AT&T is contacting customers on its 2G network and " providing upgrade offers in an effort to get them onto one of the newer networks." Here's hoping those upgrade calls don't drop.
