Ben Lerer, his father Ken Lerer, and About.com/AdKeeper's Scott Kurnit were interviewed this morning at the Paley Center for Media to talk Thrillist, JackThreads, Huffington Post and investing philosophy. There was some quibbling over semantics: were their companies media companies, or tech startups? It's hard to tell these days!

Thrillist pitches itself to advertisers as a media company, Ben Lerer explained.

"So you're a media company that stocks goods? Is that the new definition of a media company?" the moderator asked.

"I think it should be," the young Mr. Lerer answered.

The elder Lerer then talked about how Huffington Post evolved past the Drudge model. "I thought of it as a technology company as much as a content company from day one," he said.

So Gawker and HuffPo are tech companies, and Thrillist is a media company. Good to know.
