More than 670 companies applied to the fourth annual SXSW Accelerator, a startup showcase and competition during the most frenzied week in a social media startup’s year; 48 were invited to compete and 18 were named alternates (in case of technical difficulties, disruptive pivots, founder fall-outs and other startup emergencies).

Startups in the Accelerator must be less than a year old, have raised fewer than $5 million and fall into one of six categories: Innovative Web Technologies, Social Media and Social Networking Technologies, Entertainment Technologies, Mobile Technologies, Health Technologies, and News-Related Technologies. Each category had eight finalists and three alternates; five of the companies are from New York.

Finalists get two passes to the conference and demo in front of a jury panel of venture capitalists and tech industry experts. There are two rounds: a two-minute demo and a five-minute demo and there will be a winner in each category. Startups are judged on creativity, potential profitability, functionality and strength of the team.

There were just 32 finalists last year, including names-you-might-have-heard Storify, Hipmunk and Tango, and from New York, DocumentCloud, YouAre.TVand Smartling.
