Yesterday we reported that Klout, a service that measures users social media influence and reach, had signed a term sheet to raise a big new round of capital.
Today, Klout released a new scoring model, and the impact on some loyal users was dramatic:
-
I can handle a score change but you should then also update the history statistics as anyone viewing my graphs see a massive plummet with no explanation why it’s gone down hill so fast. If I was searching for a job in Social Media right now I’d be concerned.

Same here – and the change shot things to heck and back.

I feel bad for people in Social Media / Branding who rely on their Klout score (to some extent) for their livelihoods! I’m sure most of them saw big drops.
Another interesting note, Klout seems to have applied this new score retroactively. Today it’s 57.50, and the graph on Klout informs us we haven’t been above 60 anytime in the last month.
We grabbed a snapshot yesterday for our story, when our score was 64.

I think Klout is leading its particular niche, and they definitely have some potential as a business. But comments like Richard Mackney’s “I can handle a score change but you should then also update the history statistics as anyone viewing my graphs see a massive plummet with no explanation why it’s gone down hill so fast. If I was searching for a job in Social Media right now I’d be concerned.” illustrate that Klout has a bit of learning to do. If you’re doing things that might harm your core audience, you have to be really careful about how you communicate this stuff to world. The one really encouraging part about this criticism is that it shows that people care about their Klout score and how they are perceived on social media. There are a lot of companies listed at http://www.buyfacebookfansreviews.com that do nothing other than help people get more Facebook fans or Twitter followers so it is clear that a lot of people are really tuned into some of these social stats and this is a growing market. I think that Klout results may eventually start to impact search engines so I think this has the potential to be a big business as long as they keep going on the right track and not ticking off their core promoters. Explaining the scores or readjust the scores historically might be a good first step.
Hate this change … Worked day and nights to get it to 72 … Now people I know that are at 52 and did not work at all .. Have more than me with no work , it’s wrong! Change it back or lose me!
