Don’t Steal Computers From People Who Know How to Use Computers [VIDEO]

Two months ago, a thief stole a Macbook Air from Mark Bao, the 18-year old serial entrepreneur (he’s CEO of at least six companies), creator of the viral threewords.me site, and weekend New Yorker. On Friday, he discovered he could remotely access the browser history on the machine. Lulz ensue! “Wow. The first thing that MacBook thieves do REALLY IS take pictures on Photo Booth. I didn’t think they were that dumb!” he tweeted. Turns out the thief did more than take pictures–he took a video of himself dancing to a version of “Rubber Band Man” Tyga’s “Make It Rain.”

Mr. Bao also attained access to the thief’s Facebook page; he lives a few blocks from Mr. Bao’s dorm at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass. Mr. Bao plans to report the thief to the campus police when he gets back from spring break, but not before some more public humiliation. “I’m too busy to stage any serious lulz, but don’t worry… lulz will certainly happen,” he tweeted.

Mr. Bao was able to get access to his Safari history using the cloud backup service Backblaze.

    The guy’s getting what he deserves. I had my laptop stolen and I lost more than just a computer, I lost years worth of pictures, videos, school assignments, research data (I was a student working in a lab at the time), and creative writing pieces I was working on. I was more pissed off about the intangibles that I had lost that I would have been fine with losing the computer if I could have just gotten all that other stuff back. Alas, this did not happen and I was just left to pick up the pieces and move on. I hope Mark seriously messes with this guy to make sure he not only never tries this again, but serves as a warning to other would-be douchebags out there.

    The thing can call home and send a picture or a video of whoever is in front of it, as well as giving away their location to the nearest WiFi or cell access point.

    In-car GPS systems must be the worst thing to steal.

     It is ok to steal it in Grand Rapids, though.  My son had his stolen along with other valuable items and he traced the location of the laptop to another town.  He called the police (he had filed the theft report as it was a break in while he slept  so they probably were armed) and told them where it was….nothing was ever done, let alone recovered.
