Chicago designer Scott Wilson humbly requested $15,000 on Kickstarter to build a batch of elegant touchscreen watches using iPod nanos for the timepiece.
The total raised so far is $500,499 in just 15 days. This makes the TikTok and LunaTik Multitouch Watches the first Kickstarter project to break the half million mark, smashing the previous record, $345,992 for the movie Blue Like Jazz.
The sum was raised by 6,912 backers, which averages out to about $72.41 each. The project still has 14 days to go before the funding closes, and will likely get more backers.
Those who pledge $25 will receive the TiKTok Multi-Touch Watch Kit, a watchband with a fitting similar to a ski bearing where you can snap in your iPod nano, and those who pledge $50 or more will receive the LunaTik Multitouch Watch Conversion Kit, which converts your iPod nano more permanently into a watch.
2,120 people pledged between $70 and $149, and will receive both watches.

New York-based Kickstarter was founded in 2009. Projects that have raised the most on Kickstarter include the $200,641 raised by four NYU students who asked for $10,000 to develop Diaspora, a Facebook alternative that gives users control over their data, and two New York designers who raised $137,417 for Glif, a basic but well-designed iPhone tripod.
Ok kids, here’s the formula for Kickstarter success. Propose an Apple accessory or a Facebook killer, set a relatively low goal for your raise, then sit back and prepare to be ridiculously over-funded.
